Frustrating From Start To Finish.
It took my friends and I (seven of us) upwards of 45 minutes to be seated. We were initially told that it would be only 20 minutes for a table, and after 20 minutes, we were told (many times) that it would only be a "few more minutes." So we waited...crammed into the small hallway/entryway while those around us jockeyed for position.
Finally we're seated. The waiter takes 15 min. to even come to us for our drink orders, and then another 15 for the drinks to finally show up. He brings us chips and offers to bring us guacamole, not telling us that the guacamole cost 8 dollars a bowl! We were also--get this!--charged EXTRA for the salt on our margarita glasses (which he also "forgot" to mention...this ended up adding an extra 5 dollars to the bill). 30-40 minutes after being seated, we're finally able to order our food, which was decent (but decidedly average...I say this having lived in Mexico). Overall, the food at Pueblo Solis is fine (as far as American-ized Mexican food goes), but certainly not worth a prolonged wait. The guacamole ("The Best in the Midwest" they tell you) can be easily replicated at home.
So once the meal is finally over, we (after waiting...for a while longer) received our bill. We split it between the seven of us and--somewhere along the line--bungled the tip (albeit not that badly). As we were about to leave, the waiter CHARGES up to us, and asks, "So you're going to leave THIS on THIS bill?" No cordiality whatsoever. No mention of the fact that he was completely M-I-A during our meal. Even though we had left him about a 10% tip (we had meant to leave 15% and not a penny more, but something somewhere got mixed up...the $5 salt, perhaps? The $8 guacamole? Who knows...). So we calmly explained to him that he had not served us well, and that--at the very least--he could offered his concern politely. We ended up leaving the 15% tip that he claimed to "deserve."
Not sure I've ever had such a bad restaurant experience. Go to Arcelia's.
Best Place Ever!. I love this place! Never had a bad experience. Great Margaritas, guacamole and salsa. I go at least twice a month!
Twisted Mexican. Just happened to come upon this place and have loved it ever since. The service is amazing from small talk to suggestions and presentation to completion. The Margaritas are a must try. Chips and selection of salsas were delicious. The main meal is prepared in a unique style different from most other mexican restaurant which is a pleasant surprise. The atmosphere is quaint. We tried the mango cheesecake. It looked wonderful but didn't go with mexican. Maybe just another margarita next time. Our waiter was wonderful and spent quality time with us in helping us make our choices and making sure there our dinner experience was wonderful.. I think his name was Kevin.
Real Deal. I am shocked by some of the other posters comments. If you want real Mexican food prepared fresy daily this is the place. If you like Casa and Chevys stay away, you will not be ready for the spicyness and real taste this place provides. Usually busy and does have a small dining room, but that adds to the atmosphere. The food is unbelivable, the salsa change degrees of spicyness each time, which speaks to the freshness of the food. If you are looking for an experience, not a dash and dine, this is the place. I go at least once a month, when I get that craving.
Unique Mexican - very popular. Pueblo Solis has become one of the more popular destinations for Mexican food lovers in St. Louis. I like the fact that the menu is not the "cookie cutter" variety - with recipes attributed to the owner's mom (so he says). The first few times I found their beans and rice to be truly extraordinary, then the las couple of visits, they had changed to just normal. The owner says they vary depending on who cooks them!?! Tacos were also disappointing, but some of the menu specialties were excellent. Guacamole has always been outstanding. Watch out for the hot sauce - no mild option. Count on a big crowd and not so big waiting area. One time I swore they forgot us, and I've heard horror stories from others.
Best Mexican Food in St. Louis. We moved here in 2004 from San Antonio, Texas and this is the BEST Mexican food we have ever eaten. Yes, there can be a wait so, if you are in a hurry pick an odd time - say 5pm mid week - or just enjoy the atmosphere and wait. The food is spicy (great-because who eats Mexican food for blah) and the staff is friendly. So, sit back, relax and be prepared to have a great authentic Mexican meal.
Great margaritas & chips & salsa. The food was good, my Margarita was very good, chips & salsa ware also very good. That is very important because the food took an hour. The good news is that I had already heard that, so I was prepared & enjoyed my evening.
Very Over Rated!!!. We didn't mind having to drive awhile to find a parking spot. We didn't mind that when we put our name on the list we were told it was a 30 minute wait. We hung out in the very small bar area and ordered a drink. After seeing people that came in after us get seated and realizing we've been waiting for over 30 minutes we asked a waitress how much longer. She was going to go check - after seeing her seat more new comers - we asked her again. At that point she had an attitude with us and came back with menus and said "did you want a seat" - we told her no and that we would like to speak to the manager - after about another 30 minutes he comes out. We'll never go back. It's very small, horrible service, over rated, and there are tons of other good places to go.
Excellent. The guacamole is a must. Everything was teriffic. Highly recommend!!
often dinner. The wait is half the fun. Stop complaining and enjoy the margaritas. I have dined here 30+ times and had nothing but great service, wonderfully fresh food and good times. The tamales and enchilades are great.
