Editorial Review for Great River Road – by John S. McFarland
Overview
If a poll of St. Louisans was taken, asking about the best way to spend a Sunday, the answer would probably be the Zoo, Art Museum, Science Center and Botanical Gardens. These are all valid, reasonable answers. But a smaller, but nonetheless vocal number would insist on a bicycle ride along the Great River Road. Start at one of many spots, from Pere Marquette State Park downriver or Alton, Ill., upriver.
The Experience
Start at Pere Marquette, have brunch early and get a jump on the crowds. Once bicyclists have their fill of the Adirondack camp setting, they can head south along the river under towering limestone cliffs that provide an aerie for magnificent bald eagles. Continue south to Grafton, and find antique stores, gift shops and restaurants. Alton offers a great antiques district and some lunch stops as well.

My family has taken our "Autumn Trip" up the Great River Road for the last 41 years. It is a very special day with family, everyone in a rented van looking at the colors on the cliffs on the way up to the Whitman Hotel where we enjoy a great meal and then and stop at the many antique stores in Grafton on the way back. I would highly recommend it whether you drive, walk, or bike.

With nice bike trails, spectacular views of the river that Mark Twain loved, and nice towns dotting the expanse of this road, the Great River Road offers a nice family day trip or quick getaway from urban St. Louis. Crisp, sunny autumn days in Alton with the beautiful historic houses are definitely worth a trip!
Pros: Short drive from City, Beautiful Foliage, Tourist Info Center
Cons: Floods occassionaly, Some attractions busy, Some Railroads Nearby
