Editorial Review for Schlafly Tap Room – by Andy Kamenetzky
The Scene
Crowds of people from college dudes to retirees surround the three wooden, old-school bars, sipping 10-ounce-, pint- or sampler-sized suds brewed on the premises. Brick walls and high ceilings accentuate the casual and festive vibe, perfect for a round of foosball or pool. On weekends, folks groove to the music of "The Lou's" best local bands.
The Food
From American lagers to oatmeal stout, a crisp brew is available for any taste, and Schlafly's fare is far from typical bar food. Share the English ploughman's plate--a man-sized sampler of prosciutto, salami, fluffy sourdough and sharp cheeses. Hefeweizen tastes good in a glass, but works even better as a batter for fish and fries, giving the flaky Icelandic cod a crunchy-good home. The bratwurst packs a subtle kick, complemented by sauerkraut. The sticky pudding toffee is actually cake in a caramel sauce, a traditional Scottish treat. Be forewarned--you'll finish it.

I went to Schlafly with a group of friends for lunch, and we were completely let down from beginning to end. The table was too small for our party of six, but we squeezed in and began to look over the menu. The selection is rather limited, highly overpriced, and not especially appealing. I personally went with the chicken & andouille pasta, which wasn't bad (This is what I recommend if you can't avoid going here), but everyone else had to force their meal down. The portions are fairly small, which was probably good in this case. Items that should come with sides (hamburgers, bratwursts, etc.) either come with nothing or with a poor excuse of one, such as the "coleslaw" that turned out to be little more than a cup of red onions. I don't mind paying a little bit for good food, but when it's this bad, the high prices are just salt in your wounds. Gratuity is included, though at a much higher rate (17%) than you'll be wanting to give by the end of your meal. They will not split checks, so make sure you bring a lot of divisible cash or be prepared for the hassle of putting everything on one card and hunting everyone down to pay you back. There are MANY far better choices in St. Louis as far as restaurants go - I recommend most any place on the Hill, especially Zia's. They're not far away, half the cost, and easily ten times the quality.
Pros: A few decent dishes
Cons: Lousy food, high prices, indifferent service

My husband and I used to love this place, but it has gone downhill. Last time we went there, our appetizer didn't come out until after our entrees (and I had to ask for it). My rice and beans came without rice. And our sticky toffee pudding was cold. What a way to ruin a great dessert. It took us 10 minutes to catch our server's eye to heat it up again. After we paid the bill, I talked to a manager about our poor experience. He took our address and told us he would "take care of us," but of course, he never did. On the bright side, my husband and I can now get out of our "dining rut" when we're in St. Louis and try some new places!
