Contrary to what previous reviewer,
Caroline, said, I find that the World Aquarium is a great place for adults and children alike and the animals are very healthy. There are many places where you can touch the animals, which makes it even more fun. If you have questions about the animals or their care, you should ask their current staff rather than make assumptions.
The World Aquarium relies on admissions to pay for its animal care. City Museum is a for-profit and the aquarium is a non-profit and that's why they are separate.
It's not pretentious and sterile like other aquariums. If you don't want to touch animals, then don't visit. You can't expect to visit the aquarium - much less City Museum - and not get your hands a little dirty.
Worst Place EVER!!!. This is the most horrible place for animals I have ever been. The owner is a liar and nothing more than a glorified animal hoarder. I know people who have worked there and they all say the same thing- stay away! PLEASE do not support such a horrible organization. The more St Louis supports a disgusting place like this, the more justification they have to stay in business. They tell you they have "great conservation policies" but the truth is -they never apply them. They are all talk, and no action. Most of their reptiles are wild caught and forced to live in tiny cages which are filthy and unregulated. Some are even become deformed because of the lack of space to grow. The mammals enclosures barely meet the minimum of standard care. They suffer everyday. Just watch the stress behavior (ie, pacing and panting) The aquariums are constantly being restocked (with more wild caught fish and reef animals) because the filtration systems are so poor. Even the staff at the City Museum knows- from what I understand, they do not even want to be associated with the World Aquarium (hence the separate pricing). PLEASE help these creatures by spreading the word about this abomination.
One of the Best-Kept Secrets in St. Louis.
The World Aquarium is one of the best-kept secrets in St. Louis. I would highly recommend it for any occasion. It's not only a great place for adults, but also for children. Fun and interactive experience. I rank it A++!
I would disagree with the last comment. The Aquarium has a great policy regarding conservation and animal rescue and spends considerable amount of time working with the animals and fish to make sure they are happy and healthy.
Don't GO!!!. Please do not waste your money. It was EXTREMELY dirty. Didn't look like the cages had been cleaned in years! There were two alligators there and their space wasn't anymore than couch size. The fish had more room than they did. The shark tank was so green and cloudy you couldn't see through. It was REALLY gross!!
GREAT. I went once with a friend and her aunt. I am 17 now and I still want to go back. I loved it and I do believe kids of all ages will enjoy. If it is still around when I have kids I'm taking them. Keep up the good work. :)
