Maya Cafe, new chef!. First of all, all of the pros mentioned by previous reviewers are completely true!! This place is the best!! Parking really isnt that bad... right aroud the corner there are more than enough places! I couldn't have been more pleased with my margarita and my fish tacos!! Its a great place to go with family or friends... relaxing and great environment. The new chef back in the kitchen takes the dishes to a new level! I will definitely be back soon!!
Gather here Amigos!. I moved away from St. Louis almost 10 months ago and on a recent trip back in December, my husband and I were SURE to stop by Maya. Things were as awesome as always!!! The brisket is always tender and tasty, probably the BEST margaritas I have ever had in my whole life (the juice is made from scratch-no bottled stuff here!), and the pollo en pepian dulce is to die for! If the food and margaritas weren't that great for you, the atmosphere and the staff make up for it. There is always a great bartender there playing cool tunes and I have met all of the oweners/chef who make a point to check on the dining room. For the idiot who thought that they would open a restaurant with a cardboard wall-they were remodeling on the other side trying to accommodate the bulk of people that appreciate dishes from ACROSS the Latin region. Go back during summer and sit on the patio. It rocks!
A bit disappointed.... I went to Maya Cafe for the second time last weekend. The first time I went, it was an enjoyable experience. I sat on the patio, drank a capirinha and had the fish special. The service was great! So when my friend offered to take me out for my birthday dinner I suggested this place. Well, this time, I was a quite disappointed. The service was HORRIBLE. The food was awful. We ordered the crab cakes for an appetizer and when the FINALLY came out the bottom was burned and not edible, my friend ordered the pork chops for dinner and those were WAY undercooked. I got the brisket and it was OK, but I could have done the same thing at home, they were pretty much tasteless! I don't know if it was a different cook or if they were just having an off-night. But I was very disappointed with the entire experience and a little embarassed that I suggested it to a friend. I probably won't go back.
Had been meaning to eat there for sometime - glad that I finally made the time.
They have been expanding, and are nearly finished. The atmosphere is terrific - the wait staff is fast and friendly. The food is marvelous, and far from ordinary. Had the steak burritos and they were marvelous, with a generous portion of meat. Got out for under $10.00. You can't beat that.
Next door (same building) is The Focal Point, a small eclectic concert hall.
Take in dinner and a show. It is well worth the time.
Excellent!!!. I love this place for its atmosphere, food and drink. I disagree about the kid friendly thing. I take my 4 daughters there all the time. They have recently expanded to double the size of the restaurant. There's even a fun deck on the back with a real life tug boat and caboose. Now that is kid friendly. By the way, the Margaritas are the absolute best in St. Louis!
Definitely not a Mexican restaurant.
I've been to this restaurant several times and enjoyed it every time. I'm not sure where others are eating, but if my memory serves me correctly, the entrees are reasonably priced from about $15 to $25, which doesn't seem all that steep to me. Combine that with the $22 I spent on a bottle of wine I had at my last visit, and I just don't see the argument that it's too expensive.
It has a very intimate and quaint atmosphere that I find very welcoming. And the food is always excellent. I had a pork chop with some kind of brown sugar glaze that was terrific last time and I would definitely recommend it. The menu selections are from countries in the Carribean, Mexico, Spain, Central America, and South America. And for any that question the authenticity of the food, and feel that beans and rice are strictly Mexican food ingredients, a course in anthropology might be more useful than a trip out for dinner tonight.
If you want to stay for drinks, there's a patio in back that's open during the warmer months. I would suggest the Maplewoody as well to those who aren't afraid of trying something a little different, but beware, it has quite a bit of liquor in it.
Avoid at all Costs.
This was the worst dining experience that I have ever had for the highest cost.
The menu had 10 entres to choose from. Most of them involved tortillas, beans, and rice --variations on food from local Mexican fast food chains. What made them different from these other chains? The price only, which was increased by 200-300% for reasons that are unclear. The cuisine was described as Pan-Latin. If Pan-Latin means food from Mexico and Spain only, then there is truth in the advertising. Those were the only countries represented on the menu I received.
I ate in a room with a cardboard wall. Strangely, there was art on the wall opposite the cardboard. Perhaps they should've spent less on art, and more on walls.
At this already wonderful experience's end, I was given a to-go box with my food inside, and another's food on the outside. Several spoon fulls of guacamole appeared on the bottom of the box and on my hand as I tried picking it up.
I would not recommend eating here to my worst enemy.
Man - get the brisket. Great little place. I am not sure what Pan-Latin means, but I like it. This place didn't feel "Mexican" to me. On our visit we had the filet, the brisket, a chicken dish and our 4th had chicken soft tacos. The brisket was amazing. I sampled the soft tacos as well. BIG and 3 was more than enough. I thought it was priced very reasonably. I cant wait until our next visit. I get to try the filet this time!
steep steep fun fun. This is a quite cozy new addition to the Maplewood area. Great Decor and a respectable drink selection. However, it's rather expensive for what it is. Steep prices for Mexican food make it uninviting for frequent visits.
