Editorial Review for 33 Wine Shop & Tasting Bar – by Cindy Teasdale

In Short
33's minimalist, cosmopolitan storefront is barely noticeable from the street, which pleases those who'd like to keep this place a secret. The source of those protective urges? An extensive wine and beer list and a selection of imported cheeses, both of which change periodically. The staff delivers infectious smiles as well as impressive wines, in a setting accented with eclectic, funky artwork. During summer months, the back patio is a perfect date destination.

I remember one day when a friend of mine and I were walking around the square looking for a place to grab a pint. We walked past 33 and looked in at the bar with a few people inside and figured we'd try it out. That was over three years ago and ever since that day I find myself at 33 at least once a week if not more often. There are a few features of 33 that stand out above and beyond what the other St. Louis wine bars have to offer. First and foremost, the staff makes the entire experience pleasurable. When I'm about to spend a decent amount of cash on a bottle of wine, I want it to be a good experience. Jake and his crew deliver every time. Next, the wine list is, in my opinion, second to none. Jake has an extensive knowledge of wine which shows in the wines he selects to be part of his list (which includes over 750 wines). Last, but not least, is the ambience of the wine bar. Unlike other bars in the downtown area, I find 33 to be very relaxed despite the small space. When summer time arrives, 33's patio is where you'll most likely find me. The recently added-to courtyard provides you the ability to show up with a party of two or twenty and sit together and enjoy the wine Jake has to offer. If you're a beer person, don't let this place pass you by! Jake has an amazing selection of beer as well. I highly recommend this location to all of my friends and any of my colleagues who come into town. This is the best wine bar in St. Louis.

Pros: Amazing wine list, decent beer selection (no AB/Miller,etc.) staff, and romantic/relaxed environment

Cons: Can be crowded on weekends, so get there early!

33 has an amazing wine list, and the owner, Jake, is about as knowledgeable as they come.
