good food, apathetic service. I have been to Sqwires at least 5 times now and I can say that the experience has been consistent...but that is not a good thing. The food has always been good. The atmosphere is weird. Not once have we felt welcomed. Are they trying to be too hip and it comes off as condescending and rude? Do they really just not care if anyone comes in? For example, we found a french fry in our chocolate ravs today and the reaction was hysterical laughing coming from the kitchen and sort of a shrug from the wait staff. So done with Sqwires. There are too many great restaurants in the area that actually make customers feel like guests. Too bad, it is a very cool building and great location.

Assholes-not once, but twice.. The first time I wanted to go here I called to inquire about something on the menu and the male who answered was incredibly rude, and condescending to me. Like I was inconvieniencing him even though it was in the afternoon, well after lunch rush. Not a huge deal I guess, but wait.........

More recently, on 3/5/09 we went in for a sneak preview of the Schlafly Oyster Fest that Sqwires was hosting. It was $25/person and our group of 8 people came in around 7:30 that evening. The hostess was about to look for a table for us when a male who appeared to be a manager of sorts came up to the front desk and when we explained we were there for the oysters he looked at us like we were idiots and asked if we had a reservation. I said no, and he responded that there was no way we were going to be seated. "We are finished seating". And he promptly walked away. No apology. No, "please do come back and visit us again". Um, what? I have never in my life been turned away for wanting to spend money especially considering we were planning to order several rounds of drinks( rough week at work for us all) in addition to the meal.

My husband who normally couldn't care less about how people treat us in restaurants, was really annoyed that we were treated so badly. Needless to say, WE DO NOT RECOMMEND THIS RESTAURANT!

We will NEVER go back.

By the way, this is the first time I have felt it necessary to give my review of a restaurant.

Never again. My husband and I tried this place for lunch...never again.

Seated quickly (very few there at lunch time on Sunday...a sign??) after the man at the desk called us "ladies"....he didn't even look at us as we walked past.......ordered burger and beef brisket.

Buns totally stale...even broke when we picked up the sandwiches. Orders came with fries instead of chips as stated on menu.......lackluster slaw..no flavor, limp, very limp fries. Again no flavor. Thank goodness for catsup!!

Meat on brisket was more stewed than I have ever seen or tasted....asked for BBQ sauce for some flavor and it took about 10 minutes for the waitress to appear with it.

Also, very dirty flooring....carpet very stained, food on the floor.

Sooo, do I need to tell you we will not revisit this lackluster place. Not even a "goodbye, thanks for coming" as we went out the door. They could have cared less.....our money will go to any other place.

User review by sheyenne. Me and 4 of friends came here for Sunday brunch, they seated us promptly served us water and asked for what we wanted to drink. The service was great but the food stinks! My smoked salmon omellette was over-done (the salmon was even over-cooked), the rest of my company on the table complained about their cardboard tasting bread. The reviews seems decent and this was the reason we came to this place after circling La Fayette square. I don't know if this was one particular occasion but I've been to other places in St. Louis and it was more a pleasant experience than in this retaurant.

Upscale without the attitude, this Lafayette Square hot spot offers tantalizing American food, an attractive young crowd, and even shopping.. The Scene
Once a wire factory, Sqwires displays no trace of its roots, only sleek touches like exposed-brick walls and stained wooden rafters. Guests indulge in graham cracker-rimmed Key lime martinis while they wait. Others browse the indoor market, featuring everything from fresh vegetables to lamb hoagies. Enthusiastic hostesses and service enhance the festive surroundings.

The Food
An eclectic menu emphasizes presentation and originality, succeeding with both without compromising taste and quality. Shrimp potstickers are a touch salty, but perfectly browned skins and zippy vegetable slaw make this minor flaw easy to
overlook. Roasted chicken served in tangy sun-dried tomato broth with cheese tortellini is a particular standout. But oyster stew is the highlight, even for non-shellfish enthusiasts. Cream-sherry broth and andouille sausages add a wonderful sweetness to this chowder-like delight. Save room for chocolate fritters:
Flash-fried in light Chambord batter, these gooey temptations can satisfy the strongest chocolate craving.
