Dr. Horwitz had scheduled my surgery for a Friday at the Feet for Life Centers and had promised that four days of recovery would allow me to be back in the classroom by the following Tuesday. He was right! Two weeks later I had my stitches removed and I feel confident recommending Dr. Horwitz to anyone who has pain and given up hope.
Be forewarned. I had extensive surgery here and it was a nightmare from start to finish. The dates of some of my surgeries were changed and I was not told, other surgeries were rescheduled and they got me mixed up with other patients. Fortunately I caught the mistake. When I said I was in pain, the staff got nasty with me. Dr. Horowitz can't sit still long enough to have a conversation with you and if you ask the staff questions they get sarcastic and defensive. I will never go back but I was desperate and a friend had recommended the place. I'm having more problems now than before surgery but the doctor just keeps saying it's too early to judge the outcome. Beware!
Dr. Horwitz doesn't bother to show for appointments.
I spent hundreds of dollars at Feet For Life and did exactly what they instructed in order to cure the pain in my left foot, including buying an overpriced pair of $85 five-fingered shoes from Ghisallo Running.
But when I returned for my follow-up appointment, Dr. Michael Horwitz — the foot specialist everyone raves about — couldn't be bothered to show up. I repeat — he never showed! No explanation, no advanced warning, no nothing. And this is after I drove two hours from Columbia, Mo. Nor did Horwitz return phone calls or emails when I tried to contact him to ask what happened.
The doctor in his place took X-rays — which I had already taken — and recommended complicated surgery to cure an obscure condition dubbed "tarsal coalition." Note this diagnosis was completely off. I obtained a pair of high-tech orthotics from another doctor, which effectively cured my pain overnight.
Thanks for nothing, Feet for Life. For most non-surgical conditions, I recommend Dr. James Neuwirth of the St. Louis Center for Functional Medicine.
