Editorial Review for 1111 Mississippi – by Cindy Teasdale

The Scene
Like King Louie's, SqWires and Kitchen K before it, 1111 Mississippi is quickly proving that if you build it, they will come. In this case it means a luxuriously appointed bistro and bar in a converted turn-of-the-century warehouse. 1111's wood beams, leather loungers and low lighting give it an exceptional ski-lodge-meets-urban-loft feel. The multi-leveled space, packed with young scene-seekers and established movers-and-shakers, lends an exclusive, intimate air.

The Food
Though some kinks need to be worked out in the kitchen, 1111's offerings are varied and consistently satisfying. The goat cheese crostini packed with fried sage leaves and roasted red pepper lacks zest, but the house-made wild boar ravioli with a spicy tomato herb ragout is a winner. Avoid the colossal and underwhelming pork tenderloin; instead go for the braised rabbit paired with creamy polenta. The gooey butter cake with a glass of milk is better than mom's.

Insider Tips

When to Go

It's quite a scene on weekends; be sure to call ahead. If reservations are running late, relax in the "loft," with its fireplace and cocktail waitresses.

Where to Sit

There are two dining areas: the second-story with banquettes, and the first-story central area. The former is quiet and away from the action; the latter is in the midst of everything. There's also a private wine-cellar room; specify when you make reservations.

Ignore the good reviews on this place. They're trying to create image and buzz but the trouble is with their food; it's bad and service isn't much better. Ate there twice and both times the food was serve luke-warm at best. Try Taco Bell, it's better and you'll save yourself some money.

We decided to celebrate our 1 year wedding anniversary at a restaurant we hadn't visited before. We found out about 1111 Mississippi, and thought it would be fun to try! We made our reservations easily through their website, and upon arriving were shown directly to our table. Our waiter was fantastic: he learned it was our anniversary, so he brought us 2 glasses of champagne, complimentary and was great at making suggestions. I also spoke to the couple next to us (they had just received their check and were leaving) and they gave great recommendations. We were told we had to try to the wild boar ravioli by a friend and by reading other reviews of the restaurant, so we did: not so boary (though I'm not sure what IS boary) but the sauce and textures were great. My husband took our waiter's advice and orderd the bacon wrapped pork tenderloin: delicious, tender, hubby was happy. I had the wild mushrooms with polenta: also delicious. The polenta was amazing, rich and creamy. We were very impressed with the overall atmosphere, the food (oh, the free bread is AMAZING too), the wine list (I had a shiraz, hubby had a good ole beer), our waiter (Scott B., you were fantastic!) and the overall experience. A large group was seated close to us, and they were even having a great time, so I would recommend coming with a larger party as well. We think we'll make this a yearly tradition, or at the very least will definitely come back!

Pros: Atmosphere, food, service: great special celebration spot.

Cons: None: just wish I had visited hear sooner!
