Great suprise – From the outside of the place, it doesn't look very inviting. We were a bit hesitant to enter. However, I had heard positive comments, so we decided to give it a try. The food was outstanding. We got the buffet. It had a great selection of very interesting foods. It seemed authentic. I have never been to Brazil, but the food definitely wasn't American. Our server was extremely kind and accomadating. What ever the case I am glad we gave it a try. We left happily stuffed.
AVOID IT! – I have been there twice and have one word for their food, service and ambiance: AWFUL. The dishes do not correspond with the original and authentic Brazilian food. For those of you to whom Cafe Brasil is a bad memory, do not give up on trying Brazilian food, it is delicious if prepared properly. If you have never been there, good for you!!
Overpriced, sloppy, displeasure – I used to go there all the time. It used to be a great place. But it has gone down hill the past two years, and now they are not even paying their staff. I know this from personal experience of many friends there. They lie, cheat, and steal and they overprice their under developed food. My wife is Brazilian and she says it's not even real Brazilian. Avoid at all costs.
worst business all-around – First of all, Cafe Brasil in Rock Hill, MO serves MEDIOCRE FOOD that is OVERPRICED. The owners butter up customers for their money but do not treat their employees with respect. They have never hired a manager for the restaurant, and they cannot effectively manage it themselves. The owners have had financial issues since mid-2007 and have refused to pay their employees for the time that they work because they ?cannot afford it.? This has led many, including my own boyfriend, to seek a new job after weeks of non-payment and resort to pleading over the last six months for his paychecks that he is owed. The only response he has received has been ?As the owners, we have not made money either, so this justifies us not to pay you as well. Be patient, and if we have the money we will eventually get it to you.? This has been repeated almost weekly for months. The reason they have had money issues has been an 80% decrease in profits (or so Rachel, one of the owners, told me personally over the phone before hanging up on me for asking her questions about their labor law compliance) since their liquor license was revoked. According to the employees of the restaurant, this license loss occurred due to a zoning fight with the city combined with an alleged "taking-advantage-of" by an employee of an under-21 girl served alcohol at their restaurant. I asked one of the owners if they were going to file for bankruptcy soon, and all I received was the response, ?That may be a possibility.? In my opinion, they have operated illegally for long enough and action should be taken soon. Not only should customers not pay ridiculous prices for their ?okay enough? food, but the place should be BOYCOTTED on principle. Even if bankruptcy would not guarantee payment to the employees of the restaurant, it would bring closure to the situation, stop the exploitation of the workers, and permanently mark these people as terrible business owners (and thereby prevent future harms they may commit).
Great food & Great Service – I have gone here a dozen times and really enjoy it. In fact I go there every time I'm in St. Louis since its not too far form our headquarters. Every time I have taken groups there with me they have raved about the food, drinks and the friendliness of the people working there. It gets pretty full, but the wait usually isn't too bad and definitely worth it once you get to partake of the delicous food. They have excellent feijoada and also serve very good seafood dishes (not something I expected given St. Louis' location). I also love their desserts and they serve great coffee.
As far as ambiance goes the outside of the restaurant isn't much to behold, but they have done a great job of making the inside feel warm and intimate. I have sat out on the patio during nice weather (about a year ago) and it was a beautiful night and the only downside is that their neighbors are an auto repair shop. It didn't hurt the mood though since they had cool Brazilian tunes piped outside and nice lighting.
So, all in all, it is a great little restaurant with authentic Brazilian food and kind people. I'm amazed everytime I go there that I found this little gem (but I always seek out the Brazilian restaurants when I travel).
The downsides are the location and occaisional wait to get seated (the most I have waited is 20 mins., but I'm impatient). Check it out!
Worst Dining Experience of my Life! – 4/27/07 - I met several friends at this restaurant on Friday April 20th eager to sample Brazilian fare for the first time. Instead I experienced service so deplorable, it was nearly comical. First, the restaurant's location is not ideal. It's on a corner, but the 2 intersecting streets both have medians so you can't make a left hand turn into the parking lot if you are unfortunate enough to come from the wrong direction. Second, the restaurant is in a strip mall that shares parking with a auto repair shop so there is limited parking in front of the restaurant. The only alternative (no street parking allowed) is a parking lot across an alley in back of the restaurant, but there's no lighting there. The exterior of the restaurant is uninviting with its grimy, crowded windows blocking your view into the restaurant & the large flower pots with mounds of cigarette butts near the door. But since I'm meeting my friends I still go inside.
This is where things go from bad to worse. It takes our waitress 15 mins to come to our table after I arrive. 20 mins after the waitress takes my order, the rest of my party gets their food but I don't. After another 30 mins I still don't have my food & our waitress hasn't made an appearance. I ask the passing hostess if she could find our waitress. After another 15 mins, my friends have finished eating & our waitress finally comes to our table. My friends ask for refills since their glasses have been empty for at least 20 mins & I ask about my meal. After another 15 mins the waitress comes back to say the kitchen never got my order. The waitress doesn't apologize. I tell her not to bother with my order at this point. It then takes another 20 MINUTES for my friends to get the check & pay.
The worse part is that although we asked for the mgr several times, NO ONE ever came to our table. I would go to Cafe Brasil only if you like being treated badly and paying outrageously overcharged prices. I will NEVER GO THERE AGAIN!!
