Quite Enjoyable

Started with Jenas, a flavorful stuffed jalapeno appetizer, then chicken enchilada special with shredded spicy chicken and a great sauce accompanied by nicely seasoned rice and refried beans, finished with flash fried cheese cake that was beautifully presented and just right for two. Food was piping hot and delicious. Service was great from helping decide what to order to keeping the drinks filled. A friendly neighborhood environment with mostly young professionals but we felt comfortable and are in our early 50's. Architectural beauty in this refurbished building and bar. It was nice to have a parking lot across the street. Once Chava's filled up (about 7:30pm on a Monday) it was a bit loud so this isn't the place for a romantic evening. If we lived in St Louis we would definitely return again. Great value, service and atmosphere for the money.
- Pros: Price, historic setting, service, food
- Cons: Can be loud when full
No Big Deal

Not good. We both had the El Mireko (fried chicken burritos topped with chile con queso and guacamole, served with rice and beans). The burrito filling was dry and bland. Even the beans and rice were bland. I agree with the previous reviewer that because of the wood floors and high ceilings, this was definitely not the place to hold a conversation. I don't know about my dining companion, but I definitely won't be back.
Disappointed

Judging from some reviews, my wife and I went with high hopes. We keep looking for flavorful southwest Mexican food in StL. This is not it. The place has a cool atmosphere and that is a plus. But the wood floors on the inside make the place loud. If you like loud, then this is the place. Outside is not better. The tables are right next to each other and we felt like we had to talk to the people next to us because it was so awkward. The salsa was bland, definitely not fresh. The chicken enchiladas verde had little flavor as well. Service was average or below, probably should give her a break because she had a lot of tables to cover. Not enough servers. So we will continue to look for the best Mexican food in StL. This is definitely not it and we won't be back.
- Pros: decor, pleasant part of town
- Cons: food, service, noisy
