Best prepared food selection downtown! – Have been downtown for 4 years now and don't know what we would do without it. From soups to salad bar to first class entrees, not to mention the sinful desserts, they are all consistently great. They have certainly grown their selection since opening downtown, I might add when no one else would. I have always found the employees to be extremely helpful and always willing to make a mistake right. Was in the other day looking for a crust for a quiche and they were out. The manager grabbed one from their kitchen and wrapped it up and priced it for me. Try getting that kind of service with the big boys elsewhere.
Downtown Jewel - from groceries to gift baskets – I am new to downtown, so I was pleased when I found City Grocers...the store has much more than the basic grocery necessities. The deli is wonderful. I love the selection of meats and side items. Plus there is an upstairs area where you can sit down and enjoy the wonderful offerings from the deli. I recently purchased one of their gift baskets and was very pleased. From the selection of items to the final presentation...it was first class. Everyone was very impressed with the overall quality of the basket for the price. Thanks City Grocers!
Fresh, friendly (and quick!) – I know it's a grocery, but the best thing about City Grocer for me is that it is a GREAT place to pick up a quick lunch, go upstairs and avoid the crowds and waits at other lunch spots. Choose from sushi, to soups to hot meals--everything is fresh and the employees are all friendly and helpful. Joe, the manager will always willing to assist (or take your suggestions and comments, too)!
Great Market – Great service and wonderful selection of food and drink. They have a great offering of sandwiches for a tasty lunch as well.
Don't know what we would do without it – I have lived accross the street from City Grocer's for about 3 and a half years. Sometimes I feel as though I am on a sit-com when I shop because everyone knows my name and greets me by it. They don't stop there, often they steer me in the direction of new meat selections that they know I have been waiting for (the ground Bison is delicious-also try the marinated fajita chicken breasts) or they tell me that my favorite soup (baja chicken enchilada) is on. The salad bar is amazing and totally reasonably priced. The sushi is made fresh daily and I am hooked on the crab rangoon roll. Some prices of everyday things are a little higher, but it is so worth it for us city residents to be able to grab them at a moments notice without ever having to get in our cars.
My out of town guests are always impressed by the place because of the cleanliness, the friendliness, and the overall visual appeal/atmosphere of the store.
Whether I need a nice bottle of wine, a carton of eggs, a light bulb, an umbrella, a good steak or piece of fish for the grill, or a delicious dessert, I am never let down. The cashiers often even ask how my mom is doing these days as I check out. I rarely walk out the door without a smile on my face. This is definately not the case when I leave the alternative, Schnucks on Lindell. The management and staff have gone out of their way to evolve the store into exactly what the residents want. And seriously-try theBaja Chicken Enchilada Soup on Mondays-you won't be sorry!
High prices, lack of selection or quality, poor customer service – I usually do not write reviews but after reading the other I had to respond based on our family's experiences there. I completely agree with the other review. To sum things up, there is currently no other grocery to go to (in walking distance) and thus they can get away with thier high prices and even rude employees. We have had several problems in the past with spolied items from the dairy AND meat case and now just avoid it completely. In fact, we only go there now if we absolutely have to for an item. I would like to comment that the other day I went in there with a sweet tooth to purchase one of thier lemon creme shortcakes. It was prices $2.49 on the pastry self and it ran up $1 and some change "higher". I politely pointed out the mistake to the cashier and showed him the correct price which was in visible range. He quickly snapped at me, whispered something under his breath and began ringing the other customer up (who was the only other customer in the store at the time). He then continued with the insults and remarked, "some people", "if I had a dollar in my pocket I would just give it to this lady to get her out of her". I walked out. Service like that is pretty common there.
DO NOT SHOP HERE – The employees/managers lack any customer sevice or knowledge about thier products, items sold are overpriced and most of the time spoiled, and they frequently turn "off" thier handicap powered door. Living downtown, we are limited to grocery stores in the area and have shopped City Grocies out of convienence..but NO MORE. On at least 4 occations (that we caught), items have been mispriced higher than what is marked on the self (as if they were not high already). Each time that we caught the mistake and said something we were treated inapproprietly, eyes were rolled, and this last time (06/13/07) had a disrespectful comment said that made me so ill I walked out of the store midtransaction. On at least 3 occations, I have purchased spolied items that had good expirations dates. Each time I brought the items back with the receipt for an exchange and each time I was talked down to, even harrassed, and on one trip told I was "out of luck". Lastly, and the most disturbing is thier handicap acessible door "issues". I frequently have a stroller and on occation my grandmother who is wheelchair bound. I can say 8 out of 10 times the powered door is not working. The last time I had my grandmother an employee showed me where the power switch was above the door and said "they turn it OFF frequently "and to go ahead and flip that switch when I need to. Thank you for reading my comments and hope you too choose not to shop here.
