Editorial Review for Taj Boston – by Citysearch Staff

The Scene
Since taking over the old Ritz in early 2007, Taj hotels has made little changes to the Grand Dame of Boston hotels. With an ideal location (on trendy Newbury Street overlooking the Public Garden) and the Taj chain's world-class service, the 273 elegant rooms--45 of which are fireplace suites--are perfect for upscale vacationers.

The Details

Whether one is staying in a basic room or the Presidential Suite, a small army of hotel employees stands ready to satisfy their every whim. The classically decorated rooms feature everything a guest could hope for (high-speed Internet access, CD players, bathroom scales). Beyond 24-hour gourmet room service, guests can dine in the hotel's chummy bar, intimate cafe and prestigious dining room. The spacious fireplace suites come with the services of a "Fireplace Butler"--and a choice of several woods to burn.

5 Star Rating: Highly Recommended

Spent a night at the TAJ recently. Couldn't have had a better experience. The room was large (400 sq feet commonwealth king room) the staff was attentive, courteous, friendly and talkative. Bed was very comfortable, large marble bathroom. If I had to find any faults I would suggest that a hotel of this stature should have flat screen T.V.'s by now. It was a miserably hot day and the A.C. didn't seem particularly cold but like I said the overall experience was great especially the service, and the location can't be beat for shopping, walking, dining. I will return.

Pros: Location,comfort,Service,

Cons: no flat screens, AC not great,

My girlfriend who was staying with me at the Taj put it best--"A marble bathroom and Molton Brown products does not make a 4-star hotel." On the whole, I found my recent experience at the Taj to be incredibly disappointing. The room we were assigned was incredibly small and the TV was not centered in front of the bed. However, this was a minor problem as I didn't really plan on watching tv. Instead, it was simply bothersome and showed a lack of planning. The bigger problem was the bed. How is it that you charge $700 a night for beds that do not even have fitted sheets? Seriously, using two flat sheets simply ensures that the bottom sheet will not remain on the bed the entire night. Additionally, is it really so hard to get some sheets with a decently high thread count? I'm not asking for 1,000 thread count sheets, simply nicer sheets that will not give me rug burn when I roll around in bed at night. Potentially, this is too much to ask, since when I called housekeeping about it they told me that those were the nicest sheets you have. While, I am on the topic of housekeeping. It would be nice if there was some consistency in when they come to make up the room. On the Sunday we were there they came by sometime after 1 PM (and only after we prompted them), the next day, a holiday Monday they came by around 9 AM (though we were checking out that day), while we were still uncomfortably asleep (after the delightful sheet experience). It would be useful if there was consistency. Overall, my experience was incredibly unsatisfying, and as a result I feel that I am unlikely to stay again at the Boston Taj or realistically at a Taj in general. Instead, I will focus on Four Seasons and the Ritz. At least those are a pleasant experience, and do not make me feel like I am staying at a mid-market Marriott.

Pros: None.

Cons: Uncomfortable Sheets and Bed.
