Haven't seen a deer in a while? Head out here. – Walk on the Wild Side
Chesterfield is an affluent St. Louis bedroom community with a touch of the wild. In addition to the deer that are known to graze in residents' backyards, there is 2,350-acre Babler Memorial State Park, considered the buffer between the Ozark Mountains to the west and the plains to the east. The wind deposits a rich soil that has allowed oaks and maples to grow here for centuries.
Lots to See and Do
Check out the old-growth forest ecosystem diorama in the River Hills Visitor Center, then walk over to Cochran Woods to check out the real thing, and hear the rare sounds of woodpeckers in the wild. The park offers equestrian trails and guided horseback tours, tennis courts, 13 miles of hiking trails, softball, volleyball courts and an Olympic-size swimming pool. After all that exercise, you might want to have lunch at one of over 200 picnic sites at Babler. There are also 77 camping spots, and 24 have electrical outlets. Babler prides itself on its barrier-free resident camp for special-needs guests, and for visiting groups, the park offers full-service outdoor education programs to fit any physical, emotional or dietary requirement.
