Empower your staff to make the "big" decisions..
Family went to eat on a Saturday afternoon. Had not been in 15 years but had nothing but good memories. Too bad I didn't have a time machine.
We walked in with 3 kids (ages 14 to 8) and were ushered into a sequestered room. It was 40 degrees outside and 50degrees in the small room.
I asked to have the heat turned up and was told "my manager just walked in - I will ask her."
We tried to make the best of it but my back was to a closed (not sealed) door with a 1/4" gap gushing cold air.
I asked for a Negro Modelo to which the waitress shrugged her shoulders and said "I don't think we have that. I asked for a Dos Equiis to which the waitress shrugged and said "I don't think we have that either."
I asked to go to the bar where we both perused the beer selection.
My kids were getting cold and we ordered. They did not have the first two things we asked for on the menu.
By this time I was realizing we made a mistake - but were cordial.
Time passed, the heat was no where to be found. So I asked the bartender if we could move out in the main seating area. She said she would "ask our hostess."
I then replied not to ask but to make it happen. (we had been there for 25minutes by then and were all cold)
The waitress returned and said that the manager was going to turn the heat up now.
I was done. We asked for our tab. We paid the tab and the manager then shows up.
This place is a disaster. A once great place to eat not obviously mis-managed and mis-operated.
Note to manager - empower your staff to make the "major" decisions - like turn the heat up in the broom closet of a dining room on cold days. A smattering of guests were sitting quite comfortably in that main bar room with their coats off and would not have minded in the least if a family with well behaved kids were sharing the space with them.
Note to manager 2 - Duct tape does wonders on drafty door gaps.
Note to manager 3 - We had a GREAT meal at Morgan Street Brewery once we left your establishment.
Every heard of a "deep fried cheeseburger?". I was advised that the deep fried cheeseburger would be the best meal that I have had in years...So I tried it and it was amazing. Bun or no bun it was delicious. The cheese was like lava flowing out of the breaded cheeseburger. I have been back since and ordered it again for a second time. I highly suggest this dinner!
bad bad bad!!. This is the worst place we have ever been to The service was extremely poor and we waited 40 minutes for cold food. My potato was so cold the butter wouldn't even melf. Very bad experoence!!
ROACH crawled across table and management did NOTHING. Do NOT waste your time coming to this place--it is HORRIBLE. To start off with, our appetizer was NOT as we ordered it--and we were one of only two couples in the ENTIRE place--so it is not as if they were too busy to care! Secondly, while we were waiting for our steaks, a ROACH crawled across our table! We immediately told the waitress we were leaving, and she brought us our food and bill--with no discount, no apologies--NOTHING! Management couldn't have CARED LESS! When we got home our steaks were well done when we asked for medium rare, and our sides were beans--NOT the broccoli that we ordered. Save your money and go some place where the food is actually good, ordered to your specifications, and where the place is clean!
Very Bad Experience.
A group of 8 of us had dinner at Jake's. Shimp appetizer and ribs were very good and our server was pleasant. Other than that, it was a rather unpleasant dining experience. They had a good wine list, but could not locate any Cabernet Sauvingnon wines. After about a half hour, our server brought us an inexpensive bottle of Merlot. Some of the entrees were brought out and left unattended on a table near us (outdoors) for several minutes before the rest of the entrees were brought out and placed on our table. One of our party found a very long hair in her steak salad, and decided not to eat anything (our server did deduct the salad from our check). After all that, they included a 20% gratuity on the check.
Jake's is clearly a very poorly managed restaurant. One would best advised to stop to have nothing more than a beer in the rustic bar.
Never again - worst service ever.
I made reservations for a Bachelorette party roughly three weeks in advance. When we arrived at the resturaunt, our table was not ready. We waited for 45 minutes after our reservation time to be seated. After we were seated, we sat for 30 minutes before a server entered our room to greet us. The bartenders rolled our eyes at us when we tried to order drinks and told us they had to take care of their staff before they could help us.
When we finally placed our order, a few of the meals were not brought out and a few of them were wrong. For one of the meals, we had to ask FOUR TIMES for it to be brought out. One of the grilled chicken salads we ordered had NO grilled chicken on it (and they never brought it to us after we told them). How long does it take to get ketchup at Jakes's? Forty-five minutes. When it came time for the checks, the server said she could 'try' to split them up, but made it sound like we were being unreasonable - so one of the girls in our party willingly paid on her credit card to avoid having to deal with the staff any more.
On top of all of this, we spoke to the owner about our terrible experience, and he took NO responsibility and said he was going to fire our server. How unprofessional! Having worked in the resturaunt business, this is the kind of experience you comp an entire meal for. He gave us a measly $50 off of our $150 bill.
Well, we sure hope his measly discount was worth it - he's got 12 angry girls that will talk about their bad experience at Jake's and NEVER recommend it to anyone again. Save yourself the time, and go somewhere that treats you like they want to earn your money.
SERVICE STUNK!!!! WAITRESS KNEW NOTHING ABOUT THE MENU...... HOSTESS WAS NOT FRIENDLY..... CALLED AND WAS TOLD FREE PARKING BUT THEY WOULD NOT PAY WHEN WE LEFT.................... COMPLAINED TO MANAGER AND WAS NO HELP!!!!
WILL NEVER GO AGAIN
Worst steak and service in St. Louis. Even though the restaurant was empty, we were given the worst table. All we could hear was the thumping from the music in the club next door. Our server brought us our appetizer before she even asked us what we wanted to drink. The steaks were terrible. I'm certain I could have gotten a better steak at Ponderosa. I couldn't believe they charged $28 for a steak I couldn't even cut through. There was too much gristle in the steak. I've spoken to other people about my experience and they agree that this is an awful restaurant. I would never go back and I would never recommend this place to anyone.
So-so dining experience. We went to Jake's Steaks on a Sunday evening. There was no wait to get in. The service was good and the food was decent. The jalapeno corn bread and the salads were excellent. However, the main meals were only average. I had a steak pasta with tomato basil sauce, which was kind of blah. My boyfriend had a steak with peppercorn sauce, which was good but he ordered jalapeno mashed potatoes with the meal, and I swear they were from a box rather than mashing real potatoes there. Not sure if I would recommend this place.
Locals will love it. I have been hearing about Jakes for years from friends and family but I read some of the reviews over the years and I was sceptical. My husband and I recently went with a couple friends of ours to celebrate a retirement and I have to say our experience was wonderful. Our waiter was extremely friendly and prompt. Their was a small wait but the bar was roomy and the service was quick. When we got to the dining room I was amazed at the size and the atmosphere, it is very decieving from the outside. Our food was great. My husband said it was one of the best steaks he has had at a restaurant. Overall I was extremely happy with our experience. I would encourage everyone to give it a try I don't think you will be dissapointed.
