Rotten experience - went to this restaurant last Tuesday night. We had reservations and arrived to a half empty restaurant, and were seated literally 10 feet from the bar. So we expected some level of average service.

No one came to our table for close to 15 mins. When the waiter did, he asked if we were ready to order dinner. We asked (asked mind you - at a restaurant!) if we could have drinks first, to which the waiter cooly said 'of course'. We then waited for another 10-15 mins until the waiter came back and said 'your drinks are on the way, are you NOW ready to order your entrees'? We again asked if we could first order several appetizers, which we did. Our drinks finally came, and again we were asked if we were ready to order our entrees. We ordered our entrees, the appetizers showed up - and we waited and waited and waited another 25 mins before anyone showed up again. No one came to see if we wanted more drinks, and while people around us who had showed up later than us were served, we continued to wait, and these were salads that had been ordered - dishes that could have been made quickly. Unfortunately when they did show up, the lettuce was wilted, and they were entirely sub par.

The whole restaurant staff seemed confused. I must have seen 4 instances where the food was brought to the wrong outside table, and then brought back in again. I saw only two waiters actually taking orders. I even had to chase down our waiter to get my check so I could get out of there. I thought of stiffing the waiter on the tip (actually I thought several times of just walking out completely), but realized the waiter was the only one really running around trying to get anything done, and it wasn't his fault that his manager/owner had understaffed the place that night. The waiter - Maurice - wasn't exactly unfriendly, but he did not go out of his way to be friendly either. In fact, no one at the restaurant was friendly. I won't go back, and I won't recommend anyone to go either. I'm at the Grand Center regularly, but will never go to the Bistro again.

Example: great place for good bread – I've always wanted to try this place out. Would this be a place that Bradford Kessler would come to??

A Must if you are in St. Louis – My boyfriend was in St. Louis on business this past weekend, so it was my job to find an activity for us. I think for this one he'll love me for life because is can't stop talking about it. Montez Coleman was playing and he is awesome. You can't top the atmosphere and the food is delicious also. The Bistro is not too big but also not to small so that you can get a good feel for the music. It's not too crowded but the crowd vibes to the artists. The presentation of the food is a class act also. Our impression of St. Louis was very dismal until we went to Jazz at the Bistro, at first I had my intentions were to never return to St. Louis but now I'll think twice especially if I can visit The Bistro again. It's a must if you are ever in St. Louis.

With a few rare exceptions--a university gig or a one-off at a rock club--this is, bafflingly, the only club in town to regularly book touring jazz acts. – The Rep
Actually, the club doesn't even do that regularly; it's a restaurant that offers a six-month series called Jazz at the Bistro; at other times, they book local jazz artists. However, the Bistro's reputation, while lacking any true competition, is unparalleled.

The Scene
A nice, upscale joint in the heart of the midtown arts district, the Bistro books big-name jazz artists who, while perhaps not the most adventuresome lot, are nonetheless excellent inheritors of the tradition. Which is to say, the club is more conservative in its bookings than it should be; don't expect progressive freakouts, fusion or free jazz.

One Drawback
It's a fantastic, intimate space, though the restaurant policy of charging both a cover and having a $5 minimum is cost prohibitive to the bohos and beats.

The Best Jazz Club in Town – Saw James Moody last Friday night and the evening was perfect. We were celebrating our anniversary and were congratulated from the stage by the emcee. The room is fantastic, great sitelines and sound system. This is easily the best and classiest place in town to hear live jazz, it is perhaps one of the best jazz venues in the world! We will definately be back

A Class Act – My wife and I went to see Ahmad Jamal, we were so excited to see an artist who in my opinion is a living legend, the staff, especially the host/mc, were courteous and welcoming. We were able to get a table close to the front and really felt connected to Mr. Jamal and the band. It was a great evening of music in a beautiful setting. We will definately be back.
