Not so great pizza and not so great service.
My husband and I went to Vito's a few weeks ago. When we got there, it took a little while to get seated which was fine because the bartender (I think his name was Charlie) had to seat us and he was finishing up waiting on a patron at the bar.
He seated us outside per our request and said that our server (I think he said her name was Rachel) would be right with us to take our order. Well, we didn't see Rachel the rest of the night until I forced her to come to our table by requesting a to-go box while Charlie was inside.
She literally walked past our table no less than 12 times (I counted) w/o making any eye contact. Poor Charlie, bless his heart, did the best he could and had to do double duty as bartender and server because she apparently couldn't be bothered.
It's not to say that this was some big box, chain restaurant with hundreds of seats and servers assigned to sections. It was just the 2 of them and there were maybe 3 other active outdoor tables at the time.
We couldn't even get anyone to pick up our credit card/check when we were ready to pay and leave. I have never walked out on a check but I understand how it happens. There is nothing more annoying that waiting forever to be cashed out when you’re done with your meal and ready to go. If I wanted to pay at the cashier directly, I would have gone to a run-of-the-mill diner! While we were waiting at the bar to pay for our meal instead of signing the check at the table like we should have been, our only other interaction with Rachel was when she reached over my husband and said, "I need to grab some parmesan" – apparently to take to a table to which she was actually paying attention. Seriously?!
Wow. Granted, my husband and I had a Groupon or Living Social but 1. that shouldn’t matter and 2. they didn't know that, which means the service would have sucked regardless. We make a point to tip well when using a Groupon or Living Social i.e. on what the actual price would have been, not the discounted price, but we made an exception for Rachel.
And to boot, the pizza was not very good. It's the first time I ever took pizza to-go and tossed it when I got home. It wasn't even viable several hours later, which, let's face it, any decent pizza would be. Vito's is definitely off my list. Don't waste your time or money.
Great food at reasonable prices! Wait staff is not the best. They seem mad that they have to work. Pizza is great, lasagna is fabulous!
Cool place, great pizza!.
My boyfriend and I heard Vito's had great pizza so we gave it a try and ordered the Capriciosa pizza which had prosciutto, portabello mushrooms, tomatoes, and fresh basil. It was absolutely awesome!
My boyfriend ordered the Meatball Spaghetti which was also spectacular and I thought he was going to lick the bowl clean.
Our server recommened a great Sicilian red wine that complimented our meal very well.
We will definitely be back!
Don't order a panini....
... after 5p.m. My husband and I ordered two for delivery and we were completely underwhelmed to find that our "paninis" were sandwiches on regular white toast - not grilled and not pressed. When I called to complain, I was told that they don't "fire up the panini press in the evenings."
After an exchange about the order and expectations for a panini, the gentleman offered to credit my credit card for one of the sandwiches.
The rest of the order, which included my friends' calzones, was very good.
Had I been informed on the phone that the restaurant couldn't "fire up" the press, I would have gladly ordered something else. But, that opportunity will never come again.
Cu e fissa sta a so casa.. Yes, this place is busy and the wait staff is uninformed about what is on the menu and what wines pair well with the entreés. I'll grant you that. However, if you're looking for a decent representation of the cuisine of Sicilia, Vito's is the place to go. The pizza is similar to what I get in Palermo, and is just as good. The arancini are excellent, even though they're a bit different from what I expected. Overall, going to Vito's is a lot like dining in Palermo, Siracusa, Catania, or Messina -- if you know what good Sicilian food is, you'll get good food. If you're looking for "Italian" food, then head to the Hill and leave the rest of us alone.
Sicilian? Really???. First time here. Once we walked into the door, we were not acknowledged for maybe 4 minutes, (we got there right before it got busy, usually you are greeted at the door...) we were standing there wondering if we should seat ourselves or...stare at the presumed hostess, while he answered the phone? No smile or anything. So we sat at the bar and bartender was good (Shaun). Drinks were good. Ambiance was good, nice lighting. Food was terrible. Had the four course dinner, app (stuffed cheese balls with pine nuts and something was ok, sauce was good) Salad was ok..., chicken was stuffed with bread crumbs, sun-dried tomatoes, flavorLESS. Chicken was cooked well though. Came with a side of linguine w/white sauce-fail. Gelato was subpar. Husband had the "Super" pizza, sausage, pepperoni, onions, olives...BLAND, crust was good. But very poor overall and overpriced. I mean if the food was good (and I was hungry) it would have been worth it. But if you want "Sicilian," it's not at this place, please go somewhere else.
Try this place.
This place was ok... not bad... I would recommend it only because I have tried other places in St Louis and most are not good at all... so this place I would normally rate at a 6/10 but in St Louis I would give it a 8/10.
Had lasagna - was pretty good. Garlic bread needs more butter but nice bread. The Gelato is delicious - authentic!
Customer Service on phone was good.
I'd go back for the pizza..
The pizza, seems to default to thick (Sicilian-1in) style when dining and the thinner version (1/2inch at the bar) , but you can request your choice. Personally I prefer the thinner style, the Sicilian was a little doughy. Personally, this has been my preferred pizza in st Louis so far, freshly made sauces still recognizable as made from farmed ingredients, with toppings such as goat cheese spinach and andouille sausage.
On the downside, the service was poor, ridiculously over attentive, with big sighs that I would want to read the menu before ordering wine, She didn't know what beer they had to offer, The Entrees were perched on the edge of our tiny table while we were still eating our appetizers even though we said we didnt need to see a show.
As for the rest of the food we ordered, We were served bread all wrapped up as though it were warm, unfortunately it was not. The bruscetta was dry, made with refrigerater flavoured tomatoes on bread that was closer to Wonder bread than Ciabatta. The tiniest hint of basil, no garlic and no olive oil. A large portion though and would have been enough fot 3 to 6 people as a starter while your perusing the menu, too large for most as an appetizer.
The mussels were also good. I had the salmon cake, deep fried, pale tinned salmon but cheap and tasty.
The disappointment was all but one entree was either crumbed or stuffed with crumbs and crumbed veal with a wedge of lemon for $29 seems a bit pricey. Not particularly authentic Italian, but if you want fast food pre show or a late night pizza (till 3am) then this might be your place. Personally I wont sit down to dine here again.
If you want good Italian look elsewhere. I went to this restaurant under the advice of friends and won't be back. We had hour before an event at the Fox and the waiter assured us we had plenty of time. The server made sure to get our drink & food order but we didn't see any drinks arrive until they brought out the salads. One of our salads was missing the dressing which the waiter had acknowledged but i had to get for myself as he was unable to correct the problem- he was too busy waiting on more tables of new guest. Meanwhile people seated after us were finishing their entrees. This type of service from a place with upscale pricing is just unacceptable. The rest of the staff at Vito's was hardly any more helpful than our waiter which leads me to belive this is typical. Because of the poor service i figured the food wasn't going to be much better so we cut our losses and cancelled the rest of the meal. By the way, the food we did have was average at best. If people think this is authentic Sicilian then they don't get out much.
Good ford .. watch the waitress. I eat here on average as I worked across the street, the food and service are always 5 star and there is nothing on the menu that isn't a surprise to the taste buds. I brought my wife to Vito's for the first time and everything was A+, the staff treated us very well and as usual the food was great. It was lunch and I left a $10 tip. To my surprise later that night I found that the waitress added another additional $15 tip to my bill. That was a $25 dollar tip to my $35 dollar meal. I won't be back again.
