The Scene
From the purple walls to the friendly staff, this place oozes positive energy. People share their papers when they're finished, and one regular offered this bit of advice to another upon leaving: "Have a good day, and remember, love is everywhere." By the way, don't fret if the downstairs is crowded; there's a second floor with ample room, whimsical tables, great natural light and a stocked bookshelf.

The Food
Choose from several types of coffee and tea as well as hot chocolate and apple cider. Try a slice of pear-walnut coffee cake or, if you're feeling truly naughty, turtle cheesecake. Two types of sandwiches, panini (grilled) and deli (cold), are offered, along with three types of salads. Panini include garlic-roasted eggplant and ham and brie, while vegetarian and roasted chicken are two of the deli sandwiches. Daily quiche, pasta, soup and sandwich specials round out the menu. Don't miss the portobello mushroom panino with cheddar, caramelized onions and black olive paste on five-grain bread.

We went to Soulard Coffee Garden for Mother's Day and it was wonderful. The breakfast food was great - I had Eggs Benedict which was fantastic - some of the best I've ever had - and my husband had the Biscuit and Gravy which was really tasty as well... (usually a toss up between great or terrible when ordering and it was definitely great at SCG). We had a wonderful casual brunch sipping mimosa's and enjoying food and coffee. It couldn't have been better unless we had been able to sit on the terrace or patio... which were full, unfortunately.

The first time I tried out the coffee garden the staff was incredibly short and rude with myself and my friend. Thinking it was just a fluke, I tried the place out again only to be met with the same dismissive and rude attitudes for no particular reason, including one worker that looked my friend up and down and actually rolled his eyes at her when she asked for a glass of water with our meal....what? It made us so uncomfortable we quickly left. We won't be visiting again, and I will make sure to tell my friends not to visit either. No one wants to be made to feel uncomfortable or talked about in a rude manner in a place that is supposed to be relaxed and inviting. Its a shame that two or three workers of an establishment can ruin a place that could be really great.

The food was amazing! The special that day was cornmeal blueberry pancakes that knocked my socks off and the coffee was dark and thick. The only drawback was the wait for food, but it was also Sunday morning and the place was packed. It was worth the wait, for sure.
