Editorial Review for Crown Candy Kitchen – by Citysearch Staff

The Scene
Crown Candy is one of the oldest and best soda fountains in America. Old Coca-Cola trays line the walls, creating a comfortable retro atmosphere for families, couples and the occasional tourist. Waitresses never need to write down an order.

The Food
Crown Candy's malts in question are the best in town; try the popular chocolate-banana or butterscotch. The hot fudge sundae is so gooey that it carries a tongue-in-cheek warning for denture wearers. Try a phosphate or any of the special ice cream confections on the menu; you can't go wrong. Of course, you could eat lunch before you tuck into your frosty dessert. The chili dog is a classic choice, and the egg salad sandwich and the Reuben are also tasty. Stop by the candy counter on your way out to pick up some house-made chocolates for any unfortunate souls who stayed home.

I've worked at Crown Candy for over 3 years and I still love it without a doubt. It has great food, ice cream, and candy and I wouldn't replace it for the world. Many people are afraid of the neighborhood but I can honestly say, it's not a scary place to go and you do not have to worry about going after dark. It is a beautiful place and all of the staff are incredible people.

Want the best BLT you will EVER have??? Do ya LOVE shakes, malts, and ice cream served the old fashioned way? WANT EXCELLENT FOOD CHEAP??? Wanna experience GREAT CUSTOMER SERVICE??? If you said yes to any of the above questions, or if you just want to see what an old time corner store/soda shop is like, then you've gotta check out Crown Candy Kitchen!!! It's been around since 1913 so you know it's gotta be awesome! My dad used to go here when he was a kid (God rest his soul) & man would he smile when we'd go there - always had a story for us (I sure do miss him). I can't even count how many friends and co-workers I've taken there over the years who are now just as addicted as I am and who are now taking their family and friends! Oh, and did I mention that they have candy? Word of warning though - If you go around Easter, plan to stand in line cause they are PACKED but it's worth the wait! And, it's easy to get to! Right off of Hwy. 70 (take St. Louis Avenue & go right if you're coming from the West or take Madison & make a left at the second stop sign if your coming from the East - either way it's two blocks down on the right hand side). And, it's close to downtown so you can go on your lunch hour! Some people think the neighborhood is a tad shady but believe me, IT IS SAFE! The neighborhood is coming back and the cops are there so don't be speeding! Trust me, YOU WON'T BE DISAPPOINTED!!!
