THIS IS THE BEST PLACE IN TOWN FOR CANDY AND ICE CREAM. I grew up in Univiersity city and lived in North County for 12 years. This has been a favorite place of mine for years. Their food is spectacular and their Ice Cream shakes are superb. If you haven't been, get there soon. You don't know what you are missing.
I love Crown Candy. I've worked at Crown Candy for over 3 years and I still love it without a doubt. It has great food, ice cream, and candy and I wouldn't replace it for the world. Many people are afraid of the neighborhood but I can honestly say, it's not a scary place to go and you do not have to worry about going after dark. It is a beautiful place and all of the staff are incredible people.
AWESOME FOOD, AWESOME CUSTOMER SERVICE, AWESOME ATMOSPHERE!!!!!. Want the best BLT you will EVER have??? Do ya LOVE shakes, malts, and ice cream served the old fashioned way? WANT EXCELLENT FOOD CHEAP??? Wanna experience GREAT CUSTOMER SERVICE??? If you said yes to any of the above questions, or if you just want to see what an old time corner store/soda shop is like, then you've gotta check out Crown Candy Kitchen!!! It's been around since 1913 so you know it's gotta be awesome! My dad used to go here when he was a kid (God rest his soul) & man would he smile when we'd go there - always had a story for us (I sure do miss him). I can't even count how many friends and co-workers I've taken there over the years who are now just as addicted as I am and who are now taking their family and friends! Oh, and did I mention that they have candy? Word of warning though - If you go around Easter, plan to stand in line cause they are PACKED but it's worth the wait! And, it's easy to get to! Right off of Hwy. 70 (take St. Louis Avenue & go right if you're coming from the West or take Madison & make a left at the second stop sign if your coming from the East - either way it's two blocks down on the right hand side). And, it's close to downtown so you can go on your lunch hour! Some people think the neighborhood is a tad shady but believe me, IT IS SAFE! The neighborhood is coming back and the cops are there so don't be speeding! Trust me, YOU WON'T BE DISAPPOINTED!!!
Not a place for dieters!. We love Crown Candy Kitchen! The Johnny Rabbit malt is fabulous! I feel that it's a little heavy on the nutmeg, I order mine without. Seems to cover the flavor of the fresh bananas. Other than that, its wonderful. The chocolate and candy selections are delicious also! The food is good, but not as extraordinary as the dessert items. They have fresh and tasty egg salad! Definately my fave!
Good dessert, eh food. Dissapointed at the lack of a burger, but that's not the restaurant's fault. I just thought a good burger & fries with a milkshake is the foundation of any respectable soda joint. Replacement BLT was fine, but nothing spectacular. Mostly a bacon sanwich, little tomato or lettuce. The shake was good and I appreciate the existence of well crafted homemade ice cream in this increasingly corporate world. Sure candy would be likewise delectable. Overall, good place to stop in for sweets if you're in the area, but otherwise the trek to the restaurant - seemingly surrounded by little- is a haul.
Wow what a find and they have ice cream. I grew up in the St. Louis area and sadly I am 34 years old and just discovered Crown Candy. I took my boyfriend there for something different than the norm. We had to wait about 30 minutes to get seated but if you have the time it is worth the wait! There is so much to look at. They have the little individual jukeboxes on each table, unfortunately they don't work but still neat to look at. The grilled cheese, roast beef and cheese and chicken sandwiches are all good so I imagine that everything else is too. Save room for dessert even if it just a scoop of the daily flavor. The next weekend I took my grandma there for lunch and she loved all of the memorabilia. A walk down memory lane.
Step Back in Time. Not the greatest area of St. Louis, but should this place ever disappear it will be a great loss to the city. I grew up taking an annual family trip to the city every March to load up on Easter candy and an old-fashioned malt shop meal at Crown Candy. It just wouldn't be Easter without their amazing chocolate! I have since moved 3 states away and still make the annual trek as often as possible. Everyone should visit this place at least once in their life (but you'll be back). The ice cream sundae's are to die for!!!
Best in St. louis. This is a one of a kind place. For the best ice cream and candy if you haven't been go
