The Scene
No other spot in St. Louis feels more like Europe; the hours are irregular, the menu delectable, and no one discourages you from lingering over a bottle of house wine. Auburn walls, an approachable bar and a dessert and gelato counter create an air of tempting luxury. Stylish, courteous servers glide effortlessly between the smallish interior and the breezy terrace overlooking Maryland Plaza.
The Food
The caprese salad, only offered when both the mozzarella and beefsteak tomatoes are available fresh, is a perfect starter. Beef carpaccio is melt-in-the-mouth moist, sliced thinner than paper and served with chunks of fresh reggiano parmesan and capers. Among entrees, fresh-made, veal-stuffed tortellini is a guilty pleasure; frutti di mare with scallops, shrimp and veggies is a light pleasure. For dessert, the zabaglione--moist vanilla sponges and marsala-rum custard covered with whipped cream, toasted almonds, and bittersweet chocolate flecks--is a sure thing.

At Bar Italia we had the superb Italian food that we had come to St. Louis for. It was fresh, cooked perfectly and reasonably priced. The area is charming and perfect for a stroll after dinner.

Dinner's excellent, but waitstaff has a stuffy attitude...be prepared for this. St. Louis has lots of great options for Italian- so the quality of service should match the quality of the food. Otherwise, a fun location with lots of other bars and restaurants nearby.

When to Go:
Sunday nights are a scene during the summer months. Look out for Cards players, or musicians staying at the Chase while on tour.
Save Time:
Don't even think about showing up unannounced on a summer Friday or Saturday---you'll face three-hour waits without a reservation.
Where to Sit:
The quiet upstairs seating area is suitable during winter months, but as soon as it's above 55, opt for the beautifully set patio.
