1st Class all around

by VIncentJames

I have been to St. Louis Academy several times and have always found it to be great experience. The staff has been very helpful and done a great job with my hair. The prices are very reasonable, and the environment is very welcoming. I have used several schools for my hair since the economy took a turn for the worse, and the Paul Mitchell school has been the best I've been to and affordable. I have had 2 stylists in my time there. The beginning students were a little slow, but did a good job. My second stylist was in their advanced program. They cost a little more, but it is well worth it. I have never had so many compliments on my hair in my life. I've never done much with color for my hair, but the stylist, Ashley convinced me to try a shade of red. I agreed and it turned out amazingly. I highly recommend the school. I couldn't even tell Ashley was a student.

Disappointed - Will not return

by totheend

I wanted a salon close to my home and Philip-Johnson was a block away. I went and had my hair highlighted twice and also cut twice. I was happy with the cut and color, not wowed (especially after receiving the bill). I was not happy that my stylist was taking other clients while I was waiting for my color to finish. That's annoying especially when you are paying a lot of money for a professional, there's signs posted that you will be charged if you do not cancel within 24hrs (I would understand if I was the only client booked for that time slot), and the stylist is not paying attention to the color that is developing. The third time I went to this salon the same stylist did my hair as previous times and just like always he took other clients. He was not checking my color. I could tell there was something not looking right but I decided to give it the benefit of doubt. I walked home and looked through all my hair in the mirror and all the low light color had gone into the highlight portions. Completely obvious once you looked closely at my hair. I called and went back to the same stylist and he still messed it up, there was still tons of chunks of hair that were multi-colored. I was very disappointed. I will not return to this salon. My favorite new secret is the Paul Mitchell School down on Maryland. So cheap and the students are always trying please and they have instructors to watch their work and I have walked out each visit happy with the color, cut and price!

  • Pros: Aveda Products
  • Cons: Very pricey for what you get and bad colourist

Great Haircut, Affordable

by erkman43

I've been going to Philip Johnson for about a year now.

I love that I can make an appointment the day before (or walk in!).

It's definitely affordable (a men's shampoo/haircut is around $25-30).

I'd describe it as getting a massage for your hair.
