Great place to work in quiet areas...wi-fi, great pastries and new wraps...wraps at $2.99.. but most of all great Coffee $ espresso !
Love the coffee and the staff – I am a long time customer and while I was not there at the time I think the last reviewer is not being truthful about everything. I typically buy a scone and a latte (2 espresso shots in a regular, unlike Starbucks who only gives you one and charges you for a 2nd espresso shot) and my total is only $6.56. So two coffees and a muffin can't be $15.00. Also, I know that the owners have had problems with outside food being brought in & personally would never do that. So sign or not, I think they were wrong to do that and I can see why it would upset the owners/staff. I can't comment on the exchange of words or tone, but I've always been treated royally and I continue to enjoy them and the coffee.
Rude and Lackluster but decent coffee. – The weather was beautiful and we were hungry for authentic Italian food for lunch and what better place to go than The Hill? I had never had the chance to meander the sidewalks of The Hill and found the area to be historic and charming. We ate lunch at a small cafe called Amighetti's (fantastic food and friendly service!) and having picked up some cannoli's, discussed how wonderful a gourmet cup of coffee would compliment our desert. Amighetti's packaged our cannoli's in to-go boxes for us and we walked a few blocks down to Shaw's Coffee Ltd.
After ordering our coffee from one of the owners or possibly a manager of the establishment, she took our money (almost $15.00 for two cups of coffee and a chocolate muffin for our 8 year old daughter) and emanated a somewhat hostile tone with me at the counter when asking, "Are you going to eat that here? (pointing to the unopened box of cannoli's)." She then went on to say, "We actually serve food here. There's a sign on the door that actually says not to bring in your own food. It's a health code violation and what you are doing to us is actually a slap in the face. I'm going to ask you to leave." I was stunned because I had never experienced someone so insolent and unprofessional in the service industry. She was plainly agitated and angry because we simply brought in food from a local competitor. I had no words in return other than "Okay, then." She never thanked us for our order. The owner (possibly her husband) who witnessed her behavior was mildly apologetic and offered "outside tables" for our use where we could finish our coffee and eat our desert. I told him that I would never return for a second cup and that I had never quite experienced such rude and unprofessional behavior. I would rate the establishment an "F" and will never return. We then walked back to Amighetti's and ate our desert with our coffee on an outdoor patio. The coffee at Shaw's was decent, but I have had much better service from my local Starbuck's where the barista is polite and knows my name and the coffee is "actually" less expensive.
your going to wish ou had one in your neighborhood – if you live on the south side of St Louis, you are as lucky as I am- We have Shaw's coffee. if you are headed east on interstate 44- get off at Kingshighway make two Rights (on to Shaw) and go a couple of blocks west. its a shorter drive that through a mall parking lot and you will have some of the best coffee in St Louis. All the ingredients are first class and the accompanying pastries and such will put a good start to your day.
Its nice to order a drink and not have to use silly words, just small medium or large. Word of warning- their large drinks have four shots of espresso- not for the faint of heart.
The smell of roasting coffee is the best advertisement the store's owners could ask for. – The Scene
Shaw's Coffee Limited opened its doors in 1999 after a painstaking renovation of its storefront space on the Hill. The room has a pressed-tin ceiling and warm, glossy hardwood floors. Cozy window seats upholstered in whimsical coffee-themed fabric are tucked into sunny nooks. While the ambience is truly lovely, seating inside is a bit cramped, so you might want to take your java with you.
Shaw's has the usual, from Sumatra to Jamaican Blue Mountain, all roasted in a great gleaming roaster, whose paddles stir the redolent beans in slow, rhythmic revolutions. Glass cake domes display their wares in a tantalizing row atop the long counter. Choose from muffins, croissants, scones, bagels, pastries, crumb cakes and chocolate chip, oatmeal or peanut butter cookies.
Shaw Coffee has the best coffee in St. Louis hands down. The coffee is roasted in the store and, as a result, is super fresh. The italian roast makes the best espresso I have ever tasted.
The management seems to take the effort to make sure things are done right. If quality is important to you, this is the place.
The prices are comperable to other coffee shops, but the product is much better, making for a better value.
Great coffee – Just went here twice in July '02 and the service was
quite good and the coffee was great. Also bought
fresh ground coffee that was very good. I think
the past complaints have been taken care of quite well. This and Kaldi's are the greatest!
