Food and prices make up for shortcomings. People want everything these days. They want 5 star food and 5 star service and then want it at a bargain. What a crock. I saw some of the mediocre reviews and had to chime in. Probably the best Roast Beef sandwich you will ever have in your life. Yeah its in a bar. Yeah the chair are old and creaky. If this bothers you stay at home. Support small businesses that take pride in their character and in their differences. I go here once a week and wish it was more. great great food. Cheap prices too. Great burgers and a unique little side salad with home made dressing.
Just Average. After reading the reviews, I was looking for a great burger and I got an average burger. First, they don't have Bacon or Tomatoes, which I love on a burger. The inside of the place is very dark, maybe their hiding something. Overall, it was good for bar food.
Hands down best burger in town.. Simple and delicious. I would like to try a few other items from their menu, but I have to get the burger every time we go.
My favorite place in STL. Real food cooked perfectly to order in a classic pub atmosphere.
Good Burger, but a great man behind the bar....
I'm a visitor to St. Louis, so I decided to give O'Connell's a try for their famous burgers and maybe complement that with an Irish spirit.
The burgers are truly very tasteful, but what made my experience is Mike - the man behind the bar and truly the best bartender I've come across in St. Louis. He knew how to treat a customer and what to suggest especially when it comes to drinks - if you're not sure what to try, just leave it to Mike.
The question now is "how will I know it's Mike?" Well, just look for the guy who looks like Sam Elliot with silver hair and mustache standing comfortably behind the bar.
Don't expect service with a smile here.... Great food, Absolutely terrible service. I used to put up with it, but now I think no burger is worth being treated like dirt.
TRY THE ROAST BEEF!!. The rare roast beef sandwiches are great and hefty. Add some HOT breaded onion rings and mushrooms for good measure. Yeah, sometimes the waitresses seem harried when crowded but the pub atmoshere and booth seating is fun. Its not Denny's, so dont expect that!
Travel off the beaten path for some of the best burgers and fries..
The Scene
Somewhere between the earthly paradise of the Botanical Gardens and the culinary one of the Hill (it's 4652 Shaw Avenue, actually) can be found a little bit of the old sod in O'Connell's Pub. The patina of the bar's paneling, dark as the Guinness that has brimmed glasses since proprietor Jack Parker took up residence after the demise of Gaslight Square, puts one in mind of the Dublin of Joyce and Yeats.
The Food
Patrons come to order one of the best burgers in town, thick and flavorful. Fries are thin, crisp and not too salty. Burgers come in two sizes, thankfully, as do many of the other sandwiches on the menu, including a very good one of roast beef. Peel-and-eat shrimp are good, and you can't go wrong with an order of the daily special: Thursdays it's a Reuben, Fridays fish and chips.
O'Connell's does not deliver. I went to O'Connell's after arriving to town two years ago. Everyone said it had great burgers. I was pleased with the great ambiance. That's were the fun stopped. The service was so bad that the whole evening was ruined. I tried again this year and was sadly reminded why I didn't want to go there again. Cold food, having to wait for condiments, sloppy presentation is not my ideal of a great place to eat!
VERY overrated. A big blob of greasy unseasoned beef. Slap yourselves with reality and wake up!
