Musical theater under the stars..
The Scene
If you know what St. Louis is like in the summer, you might not think outdoor theater would be that popular. You'd be wrong. All summer long, families, couples, teenagers and legions of music fans converge on beautiful Forest Park for evenings of old-fashioned musical theater. They come in shorts and T's, sundresses and seersucker suits, and picnic on the lawn at dusk before the curtain rises.
The Season
Running from mid-June to mid-August, the Muny--the nation's oldest and largest outdoor theater-- presents big, gorgeous Broadway musicals with plenty of singing and dancing. Since 1917, it's been the place St. Louisans go for summer theater, with more than 13,000 seats, including 1,000 free seats in the back rows (no kidding). Have a beer, a Sno-Cone or a wine cooler while you enjoy full-scale, professional musicals starring big names in theater, movies and television--everything from Rodgers & Hammerstein to rock musicals.
best in show. The Muny is a completly unique place to see Broadway shows. Between the free seats, singing vendors, and fabulous shows that perform there, it's definitly the best in St Louis!!
So Great. Free theater! My family spent many a Friday night at The Muny. We saw so many musical there.
Love the Muny!. Even though it's HOT during the summer & lots of people are there, I always enjoy the experience!
You can't beat the free seats!. What can I say? Great entertainment under the stars... and you don't have to purchase tickets. Attending the Muny has been a tradition in my family that I hope to pass along to my children. This is a great option for families on a budget that offers culture and class in a world full of McDonald's and Wal-Marts. Be sure to pack a picnic for beforehand and make a night of it.
Hollywood Bowl East. OK, so it isn't quite as architecturally impressive as the world-famous Hollywood Bowl in L.A., but seeing a show at the Muny on a summer night is as satisfying an experience as any I've had at the Bowl. Born and raised in St. Louis, I think it's one of the classiest entertainment options the city has to offer.
