A bargain!!. I played this course for the first time yesterday. I was very pleasantly surprised by my entire experience. The staff went above and beyond to find me a water bottle to take on the course even while preparing for a tournament. They were patient and friendly in the midst of minor chaos and genuinely seemed to care about what they were doing. Quite a difference from many other muni courses including some in the immediate area. The course itself was just about perfect for my level of play (or lack thereof) with a nice mix of distances, green and bunker configuration. The course appears to be in excellent shape, fairways green and well-cared for, and the greens rolled true with a minimum of bumps. There were quite a few leaves on a couple of greens, but I'm sure they had only been there for a short period and it is beginning to be Autumn here. The course was a great way to end an almost 9 month hiatus and I will definitely be back. Highly recommended.
Play through one of the country's best city parks..
The Skinny
Designed in 1913 by Robert Foulis, the Forest Park courses aren't exactly modern, nor are they the most challenging in the area. But they may be the most used and perhaps also the most fun. Walk the course past some of Forest Park's sites, including the Muny and the Art Museum. There's a lot going on, which lends an atmosphere of friendliness to the course. Forest Park is one of the less expensive public courses in St. Louis, which may also explain its popularity. It's not unusual to see golfers out on those rare January afternoons when it gets above 50 degrees.
The Courses
Forest Park contains both an 18-hole and a nine-hole regulation course. Expect small greens and hilly fairways on the 18-hole Forest Park Course. Flat fairways are the norm over on the nine-hole Eisenhower Course.
Don't Kid Yourself. The disappointing thing about this course is the shape it is in and the people playing it. This is a good track with terrible management. I would stay away until it is taken over.
