The Scene – Tourists and locals with out-of-town guests come to see Bevo Mill's three-and-a-half-story working windmill, built in 1916 by August A. Busch Sr., a founder of the Anheuser-Busch brewery. Meals are served in the Mill Room, where the vaulted ceilings, cathedral-like arches, and stone-carved gnomes and gargoyles charm visitors. You can make a day of a visit to Bevo Mill by also stopping by the nearby Grant's Farm or the Missouri Botanical Garden. – – The Food – The menu offers a variety of classic German and American fare, including a popular Sunday…

Great lunch food, affordable and unique

by iam4life at Citysearch

I wasn't particularly looking for authentic German food, so if that's what you're looking for, I don't know what to tell you. I do know I had a GREAT experience here with my husband and my five small children at lunch. My kids were enchanted by the mill. We were greeted at the door with a smile (a rarity with this large family at restaurants). We were seated and served drinks promptly. The host let the kids choose their own crayons and coloring sheets. He dragged two high chairs with working buckles to the table for us. They left a pitcher of water and of coffee on the table for us to serve ourselves as needed (which is actually a plus in our family.) They had the best waffles I've ever tasted, and I've tasted my fair share of waffles. The kids ate every bite on their kid's meal waffle plate, and the babies did their best to devour the grilled cheese sandwich and potato bites. My husband actually had a chicken schnitzel, red cabbage, sauerkraut, and fried apples that actually was quite tasty. (Authentic? I don't know, but we ate it up!) And, it was affordable. The seven of us walked away from there with a $36 bill. Oh, the kids loved the German outfits that the employees wore. Their dinner menu looked nicer, and we probably would leave the kids at home for a dinner meal, but for our lunch, it was a wonderful experience. We would definitely go again.

  • Pros: Great parking, ambience, price, breakfast til 4pm
  • Cons: Long walk to front door

Great Atomosphere, but lacking in quality food

by pSychomoNkies at Citysearch

Great atmosphere and the wait staff makes an attempt, by dress, to appear as being authentic German. Having spent a number of years in Germany, it wasn't too different than what you would find wait staff to wear in the touristy areas of Bavaria. We tried a variety of dishes between four of us (German Sampler, Count Eserhazy Schnitzel, Wienerschnitzel a la Holsteinand, and Pork Jaegerschnitzel) three of us found them to be less than to adequate in flavor and the fourth thought the Count Eserhazy was very good; as this was part of the sampler, I'll add this person passed their sample to the one who order just the Count Eserhazy. The spaetzle was sub-par and not recommended even if it comes with the dinner; it seemed to have a odd flavor and we've found store bought to be much better.

For desert three of us had (Apple Strudel, Cheese Cake, and Fresh Crepe) for the money, the crepe was the best value and had a very good flavor, the strudel fell short compared to what we had experienced in Neuschwanstein Germany, but that was to be expected and it was close enough and the cheesecake was adequate.

The staff tries hard to give you the "air" of being in Germany (not bad for Italians from South St. Louis) and they are very pleasant. All and all however, it is an ok place to go but not one that I would highly recommend nor take out of town guests to. It could have been an off night and we'll try again, but if not better after that, we won't go back again.

  • Pros: Great staff, prompt service without bothering you too much, ambience is very nice
  • Cons: Quality of food is not up to par with the staff or setting

German food and it's novel

by tivoliman at Citysearch

The restaurant is built like a wind mill - sort of difficult to miss. And as others have mentioned - it has a hugh parking lot.

The food is good, the people are friendly and the service is great.

Let's talk about the food - served hot, and the menu has "German Favorites" and other things. Once I ordered the pasta - that was a mistake - it was pasta fettechini - but it was "fresh from the freezer". The German sausages and beef dishes are great - I have ordered routunda two times - enjoyed both.

To answer the question - would I return? The answer is yes! I have returned most weeks for the past 10. Monday and Tuesday is not crowded; Wednesday they have musicians play by your table - nice treat - but also the restaurant is more crowded.

They have a special beer deal if you bring in your own stein (they are lenient on steins). I went to ebay, bought a stein, and now purchase the beer at a discount. I even left my stein there to avoid carrying it back.

There are some things that just don't make sense - they have one (1) beer on tap; hmm a German restaurant with one beer on tap - seems odd. They have many more by bottle - but the discount beer with stein only applies to tap.

The hostess and several of the wait staff have come to recognize me - this is also a nice touch.

Absolutely worth a try. Work colleges have come and enjoyed - but have not returned.

With the staff wearing German costumes, and the building - yes a wind mill, the interior is also German themed - you will not forget this place.

Come have some fun.

  • Pros: German food - and tasty
  • Cons: Food occationally over cooked
