Editorial Review for Black Thorn Pub – by Cindy Teasdale
The Scene
Crumpled dollars stapled to the ceiling, video games circa 1982 and too-busy-to-care barkeeps: there's no place like the Black Thorn. Though it's a 21-and-up establishment (unless you're with parents), this blue-collar bar packs 'em in with its fun, friendly atmosphere and entertain-yourself antics. Patrons compete at bubble and air hockey while awaiting their pies.
The Food
Let's see: there's pizza, pizza, and pizza. Okay, there's also cheese garlic bread, but why fill up on a preview when you're here for the main event? Of the three styles of crust offered--thin, regular and Chicago-style, stuffed with cheese--the regular is the most popular, and with good reason: it's perfectly crispy on the outside, warm and doughy on the inside. Toppings don't veer far from the norm: This is no gourmet pizza joint. But it's the sauce that steals the show here, with a surprising kick and a great hearty finish.

Insider Tips
Save TimeBeware of softball season, when the BT gets slammed by entire teams post-game. Call ahead, and if you're in a real rush, order your pie in advance.
Know Before You GoThere's no non-smoking section here, so if you're highly sensitive, order your pizza to go.
When to GoDon't roll in expecting to feed a post-midnight pizza craving; the kitchen closes nightly at 11:45pm.

Yes, you have to wait for 45 minutees to an hour to get your pizza, and Yes there are no waitresses. But, it;s a fun place to hang out drink beer and eat a different kind of pizza with a style all it's own, It's not quite a Chicago style pizza but it's filled with a ton of cheese and has thick crust. It's got a little extra kick to it, and if you eat more than two pieces your going to regret it. Tips- Call ahead and order it, play shuffle board, darts, and be a man/woman and go to the bar to order for yourself. All and all it's not the best pizza I've ever had but the place is fun and you gotta try it.

Not "kid friendly?" You've got to be kidding. I can take my 11-year old grand daughter there, and have for years, with no problems from the staff. I have two nephews (16 and 13) who show up every time they know we're going. They go crazy on the air hockey table and any other game they can get on, and they can belly up to the bar to put another soda on the tab. We've been there countless times, with no problems from the staff. Some of the beautiful people and Greeks that show up to be seen are a different story, but we go early to avoid them. Great pizza (I don't mind the wait since they serve Guiness in Imperial pints) that's ruined me for any others, great ambience, and I can walk there. Heck, they've even let us hold a couple wakes there.
Pros: pizza, great staff, Guiness in Imperial pints
Cons: Yuppies slumming, Greeks and "beautiful people"
