The Scene
The main dining room is dim and windowless, but has a comfortable, intimate feel. Servers are extraordinarily attentive. In fact, they often wait discreetly in view of your table and then snap into action when you signal for them.
The Food
The restaurant offers an array of familiar Chinese menu items, but also features dishes with uncommon flavors, such as tea-smoked duck and pork with preserved white cucumbers. Most entrees range from $6 to $11. Chinese delicacies, such as Peking duck and braised sea cucumber top that, but are worth it. Tangy sweet-and-sour shrimp and peppery ginger beef are good choices in the moderate price range.

I used to live two hours outside St. Louis and would drive in just to eat at Yen Chings. I've eaten Chinese food all over the world and this is some of the best out there. The pan fried dumplings are amazing and so is the mapo tofu. I no longer live in Missouri and really miss this place.

I ordered take out from this place for the first time and I can honestly say it was THE WORST food I've ever had! My finance and I ordered 2 dishes, an egg roll, and a crab ragoon and it somehow came to $35! On top of that, my orange chicken looked more like french fries covered in orange sauce (I seriously don't think it was chicken). I ended up throwing my entire meal away...such a waste.

My spouse and I first experienced Yen Chings more than 25 years ago. We were taken there by a friend who had lived in China and loved Yen Chings. We had no idea Chinese food could taste so wonderful. We keep coming back several times a year and are rarely disappointed. These many years, and many Chinese restaurants later, we have never found better potstickers, egg rolls or mu shoo pork. These are our favorites and truly outstanding. Their mu shoo pork is assembled at the table and the textures blend perfectly and the flavors are so fresh! Another treat is their signature Yen Ching beef. Excellent, spicy, rich, slightly sweet and memorable. Years ago, I learned how to make it and it is a staple in our diet (although I can't do it as well as their chefs.) It's not fancy or pretentious or trendy, but it is a very good Chinese restaurant with a big menu, discreet and pleasant service, comfortable and relaxed atmosphere, reasonable prices and good food. We just came back from our umpteenth visit and loved it.
