This Loop gift shop exemplifies the quirkiness of the surrounding neighborhood..
The Scene
Meli-Melo sells a bit of everything: socks, soap, photo albums, rubber chickens, earrings, toys, teapots. And though that makes it sound a bit like Target, it's anything but. Square-footage-wise it's officially a boutique, and the buyers obviously share that sensibility. The sales staff is relaxed and informal but helpful. Do avail yourself of the gift wrap service--you'll get a handsome box or bag and a streamer of curly ribbons.
The Goods
The socks are artisan-type footwear, the earrings exquisite, the photo albums miniature works of art. The rubber chickens are inexplicable, as are the fake Coke-bottle glasses--but that's part of the shop's charm. The small store is rich in little boxes of all sizes and materials, pretty porcelain, letter openers, books, hats and more. It runs the gamut from objets d'art to gag gifts with grace and style.
