Great local hamburger / hot dog / root beer stand. One of a kind!. Carl's is at least as good as all the previous reviews. Great, fresh, delicious food, icy and refreshing root beer, and a neat place to visit and dine.

I miss Carl's!. I used to live one mile from Carl's, now I live 2,144 miles from Carl's. Some days I'd still make the drive to get a few burgers, fries and a huge icy root beer. Growing up in STL I didn't realize quite how special a place like Carl's drive-in was. Now it is one of a handful of dining experiences in my life that compares to nothing else, part nostalgia for a taste of home and part just wonderful food, a craving that nothing else can satisfy. I haven't been back home in years, but when I go Carl's will be one of the first stops I make. I just hope they're open when I get there.

Carl's One of a Kind. Although the spacious room one desires to be accompanied with while dining isn't available, Carl's makes up for it with their exceptional burgers and wonderful hot dogs. And don't forget an ice cold glass of A&W rootbeer. When I go to Carl's I feel very very comfortable and welcome. i almost kind of feel like I'm six years old and getting to go to the candy shop in the 50s. It's a wonderful experience.

Great food and great rootbeer. Burger - great

rootbeer float - great

onion rings - great

fries - average

service - people who work there are unfriendly

kids - baby daughter had her first ever giggle at Carl's

I'll gladly pay you tuesday.... For 3 or 4 Carl's burgers today. Don't mess with getting just one - it will just frustrate you.

The fixings are perfect, the bun just right. I can only imagine this is what MacDonald's was like back in the day before billions and billions were sold. Good Eats.

A tiny diner with a big reputation.. The Scene
A handful of bar stools line each side of the grill. There's a pay phone next to the counter, a menu on the wall and a barrel of house-made root beer in the center of it all. If you come during off-peak hours (early for lunch or dinner or late in the evening) you'll be one of the lucky ones to grab a stool, place your order and watch the short-order cooks execute it with precision and few wasted movements. If your timing is off, you can place your order to go or lurk in the corner and wait for someone to leave.

The Food
Thin and crisp-edged burgers come on soft buns and are served on small white paper plates. Ketchup comes in little paper cups and the root beer in frozen mugs (little ones for little hands). Shoestring fries are hot and crisp. Some folks swear by the tamales or some other hot-off-the-grill favorite. But if you peer over your shoulder at those sitting next to you, you'll see most are munching on those tasty burgers.

Tiny but mighty. Carl's Drive In has always been a favorite for my son and me, ever since he was a wee one (he's now 13). As a toddler, he could "belly up" to the counter and swing on the barstool, watch the friendly staff cook his burger while sipping on a kid-sized mug of icy cold rootbeer. He still gets a look of excitement on his face when we pull into the lot.

Great place for families with kids!

Superb. I can't keep my boys away from Carl's. We move into the neighborhood two years ago and have been discovering the hot spots. Once we stop at Carl's lmy boys want to go there every week.
