EXACTLY WHAT WE WANTED. My wife and I recently stayed at the Jackson House "cave." Don't be fooled by the name; while it IS earth-sheltered, you won't feel at all that you're underground. It was immaculate, tasteful, well-designed, and beautifully appointed, i.e.exactly as it was advertised - and exactly what we wanted. The food was exquisite, abundant and well-served. We were looking for privacy in a special, unique setting (I've been interested in the earth-sheltered concept for decades) and we got it. We appreciated the complimentary refrigerator provisions. At our arrival, we asked where we could get ice and it was delivered to us promptly.

Overall, our stay exceeded our expectations, and we would recommend this B & B as being precisely as it is advertised.

Country charm along the historic Mississippi River.. The Scene
This Victorian-style B&B invites guests to stop and sit a spell on the wraparound porch overlooking a river bend in historic Alton. Mature trees hide the home from the taint of the 21st century, while the three innkeepers maintain a kind of hospitality associated with years gone by.

The Details
Spacious rooms in the main house are decorated in traditional Victorian style. But what sets this property apart are its guesthouses, appropriately named The Barn and The Cave. The former has a whirlpool tub, loft bedroom, enclosed porch and open deck. The latter is a modern earthen home with a two-person whirlpool tub and fireplace. This is a rare bed and breakfast in that it accepts both pets and older children. Families feel right at home here. Whether your interests are in visiting local attractions or simply bird-watching and breathing in fresh country air, it's perfect for a weekend escape from the city. When eating the bountiful breakfast each morning, remember to save room for the dessert that follows.
