Great Chinese Food

by sushidawg

Generous portions, distinct high-quality authentic Chinese fare

  • Pros: Simply the best Chinese food in St Louis
  • Cons: May not be the best service when they are extremely busy

Great place on a good day.

by WylieWilliams

I rated 3 stars based on one 5-star visit and one 1-star visit. in reading the other reviews I get the impression that you have to visit Lu Lu on a good day. That was our experience. We visited Lu Lu twice a couple of years ago. On our first visit the food was very good, the best I have had in St. Louis. The second time it was strictly mediocre. We haven't been back since because there are several nearby Chinese restaurants with lower prices and dependably decent food.

Excellent food and very nice servers!

by fotohippi

I take my family to LuLu's at least once a month. They have extremely fresh vegetables, perfectly cooked rice, and even when they are busy they seem to get the food out in a reasonable amount of time. This is our favorite chinese restaurant. In fact, we drive from Webster Groves to University City just to get what we consider the most authentic food around.

  • Pros: Fresh ingredients, parking, lots of items on the menu
  • Cons: always busy

Great Food, Fairly Treated Waitresses

by lilacmorningdew

I work at LuLu's Seafood Restaurant and I just wanted to respond to what the previous commenter had to say.

I honestly don't think you have any idea about what your talking about.

All tips go into a jar which is then all evenly split at the end of the shift.

We do it this way because during dim sum there is no one specific waitress. Instead you have like 12 different people serving you at a time. Plus not only are the workers paid decently hourly, they also recieve the fair share of tips, and take home all the left over food.

Also, this is a family business. 70% of the workers at LuLu's are family and working to get by and keep the restaurant moving.

if you think the management is hoarding money for themselves, think again, in fact the owners of lulu's would rather suffer losing money for the month then ever underpaying their workers.

Our food is wonderful, our chefs are genuine and our staff, all of our staff is like our family.

I love the family that LuLu's creates... and the great authentic food that they serve.

good food; poorly treated waitresses

by globalminded

I ate at this restaurant. I thought the food was very good. I was disappointed when I learned that the waitresses are not allowed to keep their tips. I thought this was very unfair because each of these girls work 12 days and work very hard. They should be allowed to keep their own tips; instead the tips are kept for the manager to enjoy.

  • Pros: parking, food
  • Cons: poor treatment of waitresses

Not a good restaurant at all

by Spongebob2009

We went to Lulu's for New Year's eve dinner last night. 30 minutes after we were seated, no one came to take orders. It was 630pm.So i stopped a waitress and told her and we arrived earlier than any of the other tables and they've already had people taking their orders.she said: we will tell the kitchen to make your food first. We waited for another 20 minutes, finally i approached the girl who took us to our table 40 minutes ago,she was busy serving "alcohol drinks" to other tables who arrived later than us.They make probably 3bucks out of each bottled beer). She saw me approaching her and told me: just a sec in Chinese. At that point, we have been there for more than 50 minutes and we thought we should leave before the kids started to complain loudly. i asked for the check, we stood up and a man (apparently the boss who of course looked like a butcher with an oily and fatty face saw us leaving and asked me. All he worried was his money. I asked for the check again loudly, they could not give me one because no one came to take my orders,so I explained to him :no one took our orders give me the check for the tea and i wont leave any money for tip.The girl came by and asked for 2 dollars for the tea.I left 2 dollars on the table, guess what, the girl who I requested to take my order for the food earlier but did not take our orders took the money away immediately. I just thought that was pathetic,if you are wanting to have some nice food with decent prices and decent service, I really do not recommend you to use Lulu's. Another thing I have to mention here, the girl who showed us to the seat earlier that night ( she told me her name was xiao shu,she once told me that their Kitchen use lots of MSG in their food which is bad especially for kids, she said MSG is the type of chemical product d that makes the food taste fresh. Its really your own choice to make to either stay healthy or unhealthy. Lulu is a restaurant in SL serving unhealthy food, pricey, plus zero service

Bad Service and over charge tips

by apchow

My group and I were over charged on tips. We went to Lu Lu yesterday, 1/27/08. They over charges everyone indivdual tips for a group dinner. Each one of us ends up paying $16 tips for a $29 per person group dinner. The waitress was very confused on her calculations of the tips. We had to wait for our deserts because they forget to bring the cookies to us. We also had to wait for the drink. They had us sit for about 15 mins before serving us.

Very authentic, very good chinese food

by ssinclair2

This restaurant has some of the best chinese food I've found, in either the US or China. I ate there with my wife and her chinese parents. The food was up to their standards, and that's definitely saying something. We had a supper, where the spicy/sweet fresh fish was the best fish dish I've ever had. Another dish of stir-fried fingerling eels was superb. We've also had the dim sum there - all of the dishes were excellent. The various deep-fried rolls were more flavorful that any dimsum I've been to in Chicago.

  • Pros: authenticity, quality
  • Cons: moderate decor

the best Chinese restaurant

by heidrun

This restaurant stands head and shoulders above any other Chinese restaurant at which I've ever eaten. The food is terrific; fresh, distinctive, authentic and utterly addicting. The wait staff is helpful and friendly, and the service is wonderful. The crispy salty peppered tofu and the crispy eggplant are our very favorite dishes.

  • Pros: good value, good parking

Pretty Good Dim Sum, Not So Good Price

by memphistigerfan

The quality of dim sum is just a couple of notches below what you can find in San Francisco or New York. However, the price is too high. $2.95 for 4 pieces of "har gow" (shrimp dumpling) is just too much. My party consisted of 3 adults and 1 child (10) and our bill was $62. Yes, $62! During our visit, we had har gow, char siu bao, lai yau bao, salt/pepper shrimp, salt/pepper calamari, shrimp cheung fun, lo my gai, turnip pudding and stir-fry green beans. We thoroughly enjoyed the stir-fry green beans, har gows and baos. If you can handle the price, Lulu is a good place. The service is friendly and decor is nice.

  • Pros: Decent dim sum, Plentiful parking, Good ambience
  • Cons: Expensive
