not a place id go back
by DanN
I've been coming to Smokin Al’s for years and recently, I brought a few friends to your establishment. Long story short, we ordered your bbq nachos and then afterwards, proceeded to order our main course. I had no idea about your rediculas share charge. So we argued with the waitress and then the "manager at the time" about this. He told me that if all the food came out at the same time, there would be no share charge. So I told him to take the nachos back and bring me a new nachos with our meals. He gave me a dirty look. I told our waitress that if the establishment won't back you up, then you should rethink your employment here. If we get charged a share charge, it's coming out of your tip. PLAIN AND SIMPLE.
If I may offer a suggestion. Add half plates to your menu. You serve a rediculas / non human sized portions. OFFER HALF PLATES FOR US HUMANS!!!! Don't you think this what's wrong with our society today. The need to be gluttonous and gorge ourselves with food. Right now I have dinner for 2 extra people sitting in my refrigerator that will probably not be touched and will be throw out tomorrow. Another waste of food and money. OFFER HUMAN SIZED PORTIONS.
After this experience, I truly feel that I would rather support other local establishments other than Smokin Al's. The food is decent no doubt, but management and policies need to change. I will post this on all your review pages online to tell this story. I'll blog about it, I will shout from the tops of buildings about what happened. Being the owner of a large marketing company here on Long Island, I know that word of mouth is very powerful and there are 4 displeased customers that will complain and continue to complain for the foreseeable future. Ever hear the the customer is always right??? Guess not.
By the way, your collard greens are disgusting. They taste like sour kraut. Just 4 people’s opinions, does that matter to you??
- Pros: none that I can think of
- Cons: Small, crowded, non human sized portions, terrible service,

Travel back to St Louis to visit family. Learned BBQ from my dad years ago. This place is great. I do "Q" at home in Utah--in the snow, etc. So I feel I know what is good and this is good!!
Been 3 times in past 18 mos. and have 2 relatives still living in St. Louis. They go on regular basis. Owners are friendly and really appreciate your business. Great take-out service. Miss this place and U miss great "Q".
GREAT FOOD
by lungasso
very good bbq. lots of good choices for side dishes. give you lots of food for the money. the sauce is great and there is a choice for hot or less hot. nice people who work there. easy to get to from two major highways. locally owned and operated - not a big chain!
- Pros: side choices, sauce, staff
- Cons: smoking is okay
The best
by feveredego
This is the first time I have written one of these for any restaurant. I tried Smokin Al's for the first time today and I am convinced it is the best BBQ in the St. Louis area. The sauce has a kick the others don't have and the beans were nice too. All around good stuff at a fair price and I didn't have to drive to Eureka or St. Charles to get it. It is right on Hampton between 40 and 44.
- Pros: Inexpensive, Great Service, Fresh ingred.
- Cons: , the potato salad
going downhill
by baddy
I first tried Smokin Al's BBQ about a year ago when I moved into the neighborhood and thought it was very good. After eating there about once a month for the past year, there has been a noticable decline in about all aspects of the resteraunt -- food tastes worse, portions got smaller, and prices gone up. I would rather drive further to go to another BBQ place now, I wold not recommend them over any other decent dining, but it beats fast food.
- Pros: nice employees, affordable
- Cons: smokey, bad parking, bbq sauce lacking
