A nice outing with the family. The animals were great, what a nice varity. There was a train that took you around the park as well. They also had some fun things going on for the holiday.
One of the country's best zoos--and it's free.

The Scene
The Saint Louis Zoo has more than 5,000 animals and is a leader in natural exhibits and wildlife preservation. Moreover, the zoo sponsors lots of fun events throughout the year, and it's free. Since it's in Forest Park, you can hit the zoo and then take a stroll through the art museum, the World's Fair Pavilion or one of the park's many hiking trails.
The Experience
While you're at the zoo, there's plenty to explore. The zoo covers more than 90 acres, including the River's Edge, where visitors can follow a waterway and watch cheetahs, elephants and hyenas. Stop by the Living World where nature and technology meet for an educational experience.
St. Louis Zoo Is World Class
by ccomotto at Citysearch
Having been to many of the nation's zoos, nothing seems to compare to the quality of the St. Louis Zoo, along with the fact that it's FREE. San Diego, D.C., Chicago, Omaha.... they all cost money and don't have the charm of St. Louis' zoo. The park surrounding it is fabulous - the site of the 1904 World's Fair. The large, open-flight bird cage in the zoo from the fair is a real treat as well. The new home to the penguins and puffins was especially enjoyable on a hot, July day. You'd be hard pressed to find a better zoo and at a better price!
St. Louis Zoo Review

This zoological is decades ahead of any other zoo I have visited, including the zoo in San Diego. The St. Louis Zoo has do a fantastic job in designing a park that reflects a more natural setting for the animals and, also, developed a large number of interactive events and areas for park patrons. The staff is knowledgeable, professional and very friendly, and the park it self is beautifully landscaped, well shaded, and impeccably maintained. Amenities abound for visitors, and you can even bring in your own lunch, if you prefer. All of this, and the admission price is $0.
- Pros: parking, location of park, no admission costs
- Cons: amenity prices high
Open All Year!

In addition to being FREE, the St. Louis Zoo is open all year long. Give it a try in December or January. You'll be surprised how ACTIVE the animals are! In the Summer, they are lazy and lay in the shade. In the Winter, they run around and play. It's great! And don't miss the bear feedings, around 4:30pm.
Also, park on the street for free; the lot cost $7.00
- Pros: Family Friendly, Educational, Always Adding More
Best Zoo Ever

I have visited zoos all over the world and none compares to the St. Louis Zoo. The St. Louis zoo is clean, attractive, and best of all FREE.
- Pros: FREE, good parking, clean
free is far

Don't misunderstand--I love the St. Louis Zoo, but "free" to me implies "no cost." I get many freebies in my mail--all with a shipping and handling charge. SL Zoo is much like that. True, the attraction is free--the parking near the attraction costs $8.00. Just keep that in mind before you make the trek.

The St. Louis Zoo is one of the best, I have been around the country and we here in St. Louis are sooooo lucky to have one of the few free zoos in the country. There are always new exhibits and they always do such a great job with all the renovations. First Rate!!!!!
- Pros: Area - Forest Park

I was born and raised in St. Louis.
When I was 19 I moved to North Carolina, since I have lived in 4 other states. I was shocked to find that St. louis is the only zoo in the U.S. that doesnt charge admission. Not only does it not charge but in my book it is one of the best zoo's. Over the last few years they have been renevating it to keeps its attractions new and exciting.
- Pros: FREE, Mulitple entrances, Great location.
- Cons: Uh,, Well,, Cant think of any..

I can't say enough good things about the St. Louis Zoo. I have lived in a number of cities and this one has all the others beat. Between the attractions and the attractive layout, the Zoo offers many days worth of discovery and enjoyment!
The children's zoo is my particular favorite with the opportunity if provides for real interaction between visitors and animals. Love it!!!
- Pros: Free, Centrally located, Easy to get to
- Cons: Summer parking

I remember when Phil the Gorilla died in 1958 -- I was 9 years old and I was so sad .... we went to Phil every summer. Now there is an awesome memorial statue of him.
