Gone Down Hill Lately....

by Koritz

This El Magueys was one of the best of the best for 20 years or so and the last year it has gone steadily down hill. The food is still great.

The service is terrible. Have to ask for refills on drinks and salsa repeatedly. It seems the waiters don't service their own tables but delegate that to someone else.

Well, it's just not working anymore.

You ask for chicken, you get beef repeatedly.

You ask for 1 of something ala carte, you get 3 ala carte.

It's like they don't hear you anymore.

I have been one of the best tippers they could have ever had giving 20-40% gratuities over the years on each visit.

It doesn't matter anymore.

I am going to stop going and am greatly disappointed.

It was once a great Mexican place to eat and enjoy and Celebrate Life!

  • Pros: Food is still great
  • Cons: Food is not what you ordered & Service is Bad

One of my favorites!

by ChelseaSTL

I have been going to El Maguey since I was a baby.. starting out at the one in Columbia, MO and now various ones in St. Louis, especially the Chippewa one. My family and I have always loved it. Their food is great, and we've never had bad service. They have larger portions and are very fast. Even in large groups, we've never had to wait more than 20 minutes. Which is considerablly less then anywhere else we have tried to eat.

Their prices are also very reasonable. My mom and I can go for lunch OR dinner (with sodas, tax, and tip included) and spend no more than $20-25.

I recommend it if you enjoy good food, nice people, and a fun enviorment.

bluck...

by rinren84

I thought this place was gross. I grew in up in a small town where "hole in the wall" type places is mostly what you get. But this place was just dirty. And beyond run down. Although the food wasn't horrible, I was almost too disgusted to eat. And I'm not a clean freak. The table was clean, but food bits and pieces littered the floors, our booth was from 1970 and looked like it hadn't been cleaned since then. Maybe its a local spot some enjoy but I don't think I can stomach to go back!

  • Pros: you get what you pay for
  • Cons: dirty!

bad entrees

by jbails

I have been to many different resturants including these so-called mexican ones. I've also been to a few different el magueys. being in the business i know what to expect, i hope. lets start with the wait for a table.

no space, you stand right next to someone eating, litterally 1-2 feet away from a table.thats acceptable, I guess.NOT!!! service was terriffic, staff was friendly but the food was terrible, fajitas that are mostly onion and tough as leather what really got me was the enciladas the sauce taste just like it came form a jar of ragu, that italian , not mexican. After those very strong and good margaritas who could tell. If you go, dont order the enchaladas or the fajitas. You'll never ever see me there again, EVER!!!!! I would rather have taco bell, and thats sad.

Restaurant serves traditional Mexican specialties including tacos, enchiladas and offers fishbowl-sized margaritas.

In Short
Authentic food and affordable prices draw locals into the no frills, hole in the wall eatery that serves home style meals without the Mexican decorations. Offering a large selection of burritos, the family-friendly eatery features daily lunch specials for $4.75 including 11 combination platters. Notable menu items include the burrito fajita with your choice of chicken or beef for $6.75 and the burritos supremos consists of one chicken burrito and beef burrito combined topped with lettuce, tomatoes and sour cream for $7.25. The margaritas and traditional dishes keep locals coming back.

OUR FAVORITE PLACE

by mrsbunnboy

My husband and I go to El Maguey at least once a week for dinner. We can both eat until we are totally full for around $25 and that is with a margarita each! The waiters are really nice and the menu has a lot to offer, including steaks and chicken dishes. Friday nights there will be a wait, but it is totally worth it!!

  • Pros: cheap food, fast service
  • Cons: busy on friday nights

Best mexican food in St. Louis

by lonestar57

Born and raised in texas, I searched all over St. Louis in search for some comperable mexican food. Though i found some tasty restaurants none seemed to really compare to the mexican food back home. However, El Maguey is not only the best mexican resaturant in St. Louis but their Fajitas could probably rival those of most restaurants in Texas. In addition to the fajitas for one being enough for at least two meals, the margaritas are delicious. If you are up for it you can buy a "monster margarita" which will be more than enough for you to be able to convince whoever you are with to drive you home.

  • Pros: Inexpensive

Best Fajitas in town!

by mikljonarch

The Fajitas Especial el Maguey is wonderful, with beef, chicken, shrimp and chorizo sausage. And the iron skillet is packed with meat, peppers, onions and tomatoes. Order some extra pico de gallo relish and eat for two from the "uno persona" platter.

The Concord Plaza location was remodeled in the past 12-18 months and has a wonderful ambience.

  • Pros: taste, value

This is some of the best Mexican food around, and you definitely don't go home hungry. The price is one that can't be beat, either..

  • Pros: Great taste, lots of food, inexpensive
