Good sushi, good atmosphere, slow service
by simbolo at Citysearch
The sushi was pretty good. I'd put it below Drunken Fish and Wasabi, but still pretty good for STL area sushi. Price wise it was pretty standard fair for sushi. Standard rolls (Tuna, salmon, Cal, etc) 4.75-6.
The waitness we had was really funny and entertaining. She was very nice and tended to us pretty well. However once we had finished our sushi she was a little slow of giving us our check.
With that said I'd go again.
terrible service, overprice
by Linda2046 at Citysearch
I would never ever go back SEKI again!
The waitress is rude, and old-crazy looking. The food isn't impressive at all but overprice too much.
They don't offer free refill drinks, and the selection is limited. I saw three huge nasty creatures on the floor and in the bathroom. That is disgusting! I also saw few fly in the soy sauce bottles. I didn't even wanna eat the food I order. I didn't leave "good" tips for the rude waitress, and I will never ever go back there for the rest of my life.
Overpriced, but decent food, sometimes nasty treatment from the waiters if you are not asian
by jay57 at Citysearch
Ok, first off, the food and drink is extremely expensive, but that is not unusual for Japanese restaurants. However, what bothered me about the place is that some servers (not all) are blatantly cold/rude towards non-Asians while at the same time acting very warm and hospitable to asians. I ate there a few times with asian friends and recieved unusually cold treatment when compared to the treatment of my asian friend recieved. Again, not all the servers are like that. Some are quite nice. However, it does create an uncomfortable feeling that makes you NOT want to leave a tip. Generally the food is overpriced, but decent.
below average hospitality

i was very excited to go to SEKI today. i was sadly disappointed. the woman others have talked about being a bad waiter was OUR waiter! i asked her for suggestions since it was my first time and my friends first time eating sushi,, she said, i no do that, if he dont like he still pay, you will have to make suggestions to him. i was so shocked at the rude behavior. i knew what i wanted, however, what i ordered did not warrant the price. the octopus was very rubbery. i had no choice to what kind of sushi or sashimi i preferred. i have een other places where they ask me what i prefer, not have the attitude you get what we say. i will certainly not be going back.
- Cons: over priced, small portions, rude service, no parking at 4:30pm sunday
One of the better places
by chirochef at Citysearch
There are well over 30 places in the St. Louis area for sushi. I have been to all but two; both far off. I apprenticed to a Japanese chef. Everything I've had at Seki's has been excellent. I go at lunch, and service has been great, but I cannot comment on busier times. Seki can be somewhat reserved, but don't mistake this for aloof -- he has been friendly, and is very knowledgeable. The worst part has been parking, but otherwise I highly recommend here.
- Pros: Food, Selection, Knowledge base
- Cons: Parking, Parking
Izakaya in the Loop
by taishob at Citysearch
I read a few negative reviews, but as one who has gone to Seki numerous times, I like them best in the city, even though I have tried many other sushi places.
Why?
Seki is the most authentic, almost Izakaya style restaurant in St. Louis. Growing up in NYC, living in both Tokyo and Osaka, I found Seki to be the closest to the "home" atmosphere found in Japan. The local Izakaya (Literally, place to drink Sake) feel is probably why every Japanese guest I have ever brought to Seki loves it.
Don't wory about the Zuzushi Obasan she means no harm; she's probably from Kansai where everyone means business; if you speak Japanese, she softens up a bit!
One caveat: If you are in a large group and are in a hurry, you may want to go elsewhere. Groups of 6-8 are about the largest you want to try.
- Pros: Atmosphere, Japanese Chef, Appetizers
Seki keeps it fresh
by cnkass at Citysearch
Seki's sushi is worth the trip, varied and very fresh. Also great "comfort food" meals like the Beef Bowl and the Duck dish (Konbangwa sp?). The wait staff are quite efficient and cordial. Seki tends his sushi bar deftly...every customer feels welcome.
- Pros: fair pricing, great, fresh food, very fresh sushi
The extensive menu offers some of the city's most delightful--and otherwise hard to find--Japanese dishes.

The Scene
Seki serves great sushi in a great location, so it's usually packed. If you come during prime hours, be prepared to be rushed through your meal by waiters who favor efficiency over manners. The quick meals, however, make this a great place to grab dinner before going to the Tivoli or COCA.
The Food
Seki is a great place to branch out and learn a little more about Japanese cuisine. The menu is extensive, moving from the standard sushi set to specials such as deep-fried flounder--the whole fish, which you break into pieces and dip into ponzu, a citrus-flavored soy sauce. Try the wonderful unaju, eel served on top of rice. The extensive list of appetizers also offers some gems such as agedashidofu and kushiage. Another good thing about Seki is the complimentary appetizers, like boiled edamame and vinegar-cucumber salad.
